Chapter 21: Mistakes

The next day rolled around and Levi was quieter than usual which was weird for both of them. Eren had tried multiple times during the day to hold up some sort of conversation but Levi just wasn't in the mood. At school he would do his job and wouldn't refer to Eren with his name and instead said Mr. Jaeger which Eren didn't like.

Ever since the incident with Levi hitting his ribs it's been like they were pushing and pulling at each other. Sometimes Levi would make a move and other times Eren would. Everything was hazy before that but Levi just didn't want to get close because he realized he wasn't going to get Eren back that easy and even if he did win him over he certainly couldn't be with him. Farlan was as possessive as usual at school and Jean sat by Eren who was shifting uncomfortably because he still couldn't recall what happened. Eren would be looking at the board and could feel Jean burning holes into his side. After class Eren decided he wanted to talk some things over with Jean.

"Hey Jean can we talk for a sec?" Jean was talking to some random student before eyeing Eren up and down then agreeing to talk.

"Of course, what's up?" Jean was waiting for Eren to speak but Eren couldn't find the words to tell Jean.

"I think we should break up, I know we haven't been together for long or really done anything but I need some space and to recover from things and I'm sorry but I don't know any other way to tell you." Eren looked away but he could sense Jean and when he looked up, Jean was set in a frown and looked like he was thinking really hard about a question but couldn't find an answer.

"Is it because of Mr.Rivalle?" Eren wanted to avoid answering that question any way possible but that was the inevitable truth. Eren looked down at his shoes and was twiddling his fingers nervously trying to come up with a good excuse.

"I do-" Jean put his finger on Eren's lips to shut him up.

" So it is....well you definitely don't want Principal Erwin finding out now do ya...so let's just forget this conversation even happened 'kay? I'll see you at your house later." Jean removed his finger and kissed Eren's forehead before winking and walking off to his next class.

'Did he just blackmail me into staying in a relationship?' Eren wasn't sure what had just happened or if he should go to someone so he could get help. Instead Eren returned to Levi's class for part two French and Levi didn't notice how distressed he was until they had gotten home later that day and Eren went right into the room and didn't leave until Hanji had made dinner. Eren walked out into the middle of quite a funny conversation.

"Okay why the fuck are there so many goddamn brats in my house? I'm not running a fucking orphanage. Jesus christ." Levi shook his head and continued to pick at his food.

"But Heichou, I thought you loved all of us? Why would you want us to leave?" Levi looked to Hanji who was grinning from wall to wall and he slowly stood up and grabbed his plate then proceeded to toss it at her. Hanji got a plate to the face and flung backwards spilling water everywhere.

"Okay so why are you and Armin here?" Levi sat back down and pretended like Hanji wasn't lying on the ground in defeat.

"We wanted to be here for Eren since I'm not really needed at home right now and Armin lives with his grandpa who doesn't care where he's at.

"Why aren't you needed at home?" Levi was curious about her reasoning especially since she probably had a family that missed her.

Mikasa looked around for Eren to see if he was listening in but she didn't see him so she continued on.
"It's been just me for about three years since my parents died in a car accident and I didn't have any other family so I learned how to take care of myself at fourteen and since then I've been on my own but I didn't want to concern Eren so I acted okay about it for this long." Mikasa was finished talking and could hear a tiny cry from the hallway and pushed herself out of her chair causing it to fall. She darted into the hall to hear Levi's door slam and see Eren running into the room and locking the door.
