Year one

Tuesday – 25th February – 8:00 am

The Christmas holidays were excellent as usual but I'm glad to be back in school. I vented to my father about my frustration at Harry Potter making the Quidditch team when he is clearly incompetent. Besides it's not fair, I've been training for this my whole life and he just comes out of nowhere and gets a spot. First years aren't even allowed to try out! Also it's a great honour for him considering he's the first in about a century.

Yes well done Potter.

My father was most upset and said he'd write to Professor Dumbledore on my behalf. I wouldn't mind not being on the team this year, if Potter wasn't. So my father made sure we practiced every day, and I didn't think it was possible but I've gotten even better.

During breakfast this morning, Zeus dropped my letter into my cereal. The milk splashed all over the table, not only making my letter wet but me as well. Stupid owl. I dotted a cloth at the letter first hoping none of the ink smudged off, and then at myself. Malfoy was also affected by the impact but he can sort himself out, he doesn't need me to baby him.

Ignoring his scowling face, I opened the letter with care. I instantly recognised the messy handwriting of my fathers.

Dear Win,

This is absolutely ridiculous; Dumbledore has dared informed me that he can do nothing for you as he has no control of the teams. He has said you must go and ask yourself, go to the captain. Yet, he doesn't seem to think there's a point considering matches have already been played.

Winston my advice would be to wait it out and give it your all next year and see what they have been missing. When you make that team, you mock them for losing this year, your too good for them anyway. We will have you playing for Ireland in no time.

I'm really sorry Winnie, but this is out of my control. Please enjoy the rest of you school year and send the others my blessings. If it makes you feel any better Mr. Malfoy is also bitterly angry. We are excited to see you in summer.

Take care.

Love,

The Wixx family.

I sigh in frustration. The Gryffindor versus Slytherin match was a complete disaster. I could barely watch. We always win, sure they might play a little dirty but you can't be the best without getting your hands a little dirty. So many goals I know I would've saved, it physically hurt me.

I felt bad, but I couldn't stand to be near Ed for two weeks after. His gloating smile and his stupid friendship with potter. Who didn't even catch the snitch but ate it. You'd swear he's not being fed in this school.

I crumple the letter and put those thoughts aside. No point in dwelling on them now. "What's first?" I ask Malfoy but Pansy has decided she was going to answer.

"Potions." She replied with a smile, I nodded and resumed eating my cereal. I don't have any problems with Pansy but she's stuck to our side like glue and I don't like being the paper. She sits and eats with us every day, always walking beside us and even when I was meeting with the outsiders she was on my trail. I had to tell her to back off.

---

Professor Snape was sweeping around the room examining all our potions, his long black cape trailing with every step. We were doing boil cure potions which is something I don't think will ever be useful but I do my best anyway. Professor Snap criticises almost everyone, especially Harry Potter. This gives me some satisfaction and I feel slightly guilty for it.

He stops at mine and Ed's. He isn't as harsh with Ed as he normally is and with that Ed's smile is beaming. I wait for mine but he just stares at it.

"Excellent Mr. Wixx. Ten points to Slytherin." He almost smiles. I flash my toothiest smile; this has made up for this morning. Snape's stamp of approval is a great honour.

I can't help but notice Ed's face drop. He mutters something under his breath that I can't exactly hear but I catch the word "biased." I roll my eyes at his petty jealousy and continue to stir my potion, the small smirk never leaving my face.

---

The rest of the day went by smoothly, getting more homework than anticipated, though. I don't mind doing homework but it just feels like such a waste of my time.

In the common room we are playing exploding chess, well Draco and I are. Crabbe and Goyle are just slouching on the couch rubbing their large stomachs, groaning as they always do. And pansy... well she is watching intensively, which is throwing me off.

Her eyes are buldging out her head and she sweats whenever we make a move as if her life is on the line. I stare at Malfoy and he does the same. I know were thinking the same thing. Then Malfoy snaps his head towards her.

"Parkinson, pop your eyeballs back in your socket or go sit with Crabbe and Goyle. Your distracting me." Pansy looks between the both of us and I nod my head in agreement. She drops her gaze and nods. She stands up and joins the two lazy boys.

I win the game, by the skin of my teeth, and jump up in victory. Malfoy flips the board in anger and spits out "Whatever." Which causes me to laugh. I prefer playing with Malfoy because he's actually competition unlike my other friends.

Pansy smiles at me and I feel sorry for the harsh words Malfoy said to her. "Wanna play Parkinson?" I ask in attempt at friendliness. Her head sort of perks up and she nods enthusiastically, walking over to the spot on the floor where we are playing.

I regret asking when I lose, though. This gave Malfoy great satisfaction, he even high-fived her. "Malfoy that just makes you a double loser, considering you can't even beat me." Which he just rolls his eyes at.

I slump in between Crabbe and Goyle on the long couch and practice a few spells out of boredom. I was trying to change the colour of the fire but it was extremely unsuccessful. I groaned in annoyance and turned to Goyle who was laughing.

"Shut up Goyle, not like you could do much better." When he leaned up and his face shined in the fire I couldn't hold in my laughter. Nor could Malfoy or Parkinson even Crabbe tries to surpass his smile.

Goyle frowned at us, "What?" he insisted.

"Nice eyebrows." I managed between laughs, his two eyebrows were completely different colours. His left being a bright, lime green and his right a slight bubble gum colour. Goyle was not one bit impressed.

"Change it back, right now!" he demanded, but I shrugged "I don't know the reverse." Its true I actually don't, that's why I was trying with the fire because I knew it would eventually die out.

Goyle got up abruptly, kicked the hard bottom of the couch with his foot. I heard a crunching noise and pray it's not his toes. He makes his way to the staircase and stomps all the way up, trying to prove a point.

This made the laughing even worse, to the point where I could hardly breath. Malfoy kept making eyebrow gestures or imitating the kick in a mocking way, which wasn't helping. This kind of laughter, reminded me why I wanted to be back in school. We laughed all the way up to bed, only quieting down when we fell asleep.
