Year one

Monday 31st – Sunday 7:40 am

I woke up early enough for a day where I feel I deserve a lie in. I straighten my legs, arch my back and hold my arms out wide. A huge yawn escapes my lips and sit up. My eyes are groggy and my hands are lying flat on either side of me.

A small bundle of presents wrapped in brown paper are stacked at the end of the bed. I opened them with great excitement.

Chocolate frogs, every flavour beans and pumpkin pasties from Josh. Mm all my favourite sweets.

A set of exploding snap cards and a still picture of the outsiders in a dark wooden frame from Jess. Looking at the four of us lying on the grass on sports day last year. Jess looks especially funny considering she didn't have two front teeth. I place the frame on the bedside locker and open the present from Mother and Father.

A new jumper and three pairs of socks.

Finally, I open the last present on the floor. A small book called "How to fly for dummies." A small note was stuck to the front. "hopefully next time you won't smack yourself in the face, maybe one day we can actually fly together instead of hover. Happy birthday mate - Win.

My lips pursed, in all honesty I wasn't expecting a gift from him, it is a nice surprise. We haven't spoken since the flying incedent, whoever gets to the tree first sits with our friends the other walks away. Sting and Jess says were being stupid, but I just couldn't shake the way he acted out of my head.

I do miss him though.

The day went by normally, a few Happy birthdays here and there. During the feast, professor Quirrell rushed in to announce a troll was in the girl's toilets. Percy our prefect brought us back to our common room. Throughout the commotion I lost Ron and Harry so I was left in the common room by myself.

Finally, the troll was taken care of and we were allowed to leave again. I leave as quick as I can and make my way to the frosty lake. It was lonely and no one sat under the over hung leaves. A long sigh escaped my lips and I sat frozen under the tree.

No more than 3 minutes later Jess arrived and smothered me in a death gripping hug. "Happy birthday, Eddie!" she squealed in my ear and I flinched with the pain. "Thank you!" I smiled at the forever grinning girl.

Josh stalked over, another hug was given. We waited at least 10 minutes but it didn't look like Win was going to show. "I'm sorry, Ed." Josh patted me in the back in a soothing way. "It's ok, I don't care." I smiled but I do care. I really do.

Jess did some spell which conjured up a cake out of whatever weird ingredients Sting brought with him. It was beautiful, huge chocolate cake with pink frosted icing. The words "HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDDIE!" sprawled along the top of it and 12 neatly placed candles along the circumference.

Just as Jess was lighting them, a tall porky figure stood shadowed in the light of the small flame. His hands were placed within each other, fidgeting slightly nervous. "I'm not too late am I?" Wins voice was low but hopeful. "No." I smile and he sits to the left of me.

A chorus of the cliché happy birthday was sang and a painful 12 bashes from each of them was given. Jess did not hold back for anything. I rubbed my arm where the bruise was bound to be formed later. Josh literally high-fived Jess "Nice one Jess." On her final blow.

"Well prepare for the birthday tradition." Winston smiled widely and I groaned hoping they'd forget. I turned to face Jess and Josh and they were just as eager as Win was. "It's tradition Eddie, no exceptions!" Jess's annoying matter-of-fact voice rang in my ears. "Josh just know I hate your mother for starting this!"

When our parents were in school they did this silly thing every year on their birthday that Josh's mother did with her family. They called it "making themselves a birthday cake." It's hilarious when it's not you. Jess started it this time.

Jess poured the flour all over the top of my head. My eyelashes were bright white and I licked my lips and the red was protruding through the snow white flour. I coughed as it all went up my nose, next Josh poured what felt like litres of cold milk on top of the flour. I shuddered as the white liquid made the flour stick to my skin. I opened my mouth trying to catch some in my mouth. an instant regret as a mix of milk and flour touched my tongue.

Win had little bit too much fun with the eggs. He cracked them hard and mixed the yolk right into my hair like it was some type of gel. They could hardly breathe with the laughter. I on the other hand was freezing my ass off. "Hurry up!" I shouted. The perfect cake that sat in front of us was being pushed closer by Jess.

The three of them placed their freezing hands on the back of my head. I shuddered at their touch. Then with all their force they shoved my messy face into the huge cake. As I lifted my head I couldn't see a thing. I wiped my eyes on my sleeve and they were doubled over. "Tasty?" josh managed to say. I licked my lips then smacked them, "Mmm chocolate!" I laugh.

After I showered, I sat in the warm common room right in front of the fire. Harry, Ron and that girl Hermione sat nearby. They talked about how they single headedly took down a giant troll. I don't know, though, just didn't seem likely. What teachers would allow them to do that? But then again I couldn't find them earlier, so their story is possible.

Way to steal my thunder guys.

Today felt normal. Today was great. One of the best days I've had in this school. It felt like it did two months ago. I smiled at the bright orange fire in front of me. I'm ready to take on the world now.
