Year one
Monday - September 2nd - 7:30 am
Imagining only yesterday morning makes me ache with loneliness. Last night was endless. Could we have been only making plans yesterday? It seems like a lifetime ago. Like a long dream that deteriorated into a nightmare. I thought maybe if I fell asleep I'd wake back up in West Cave where I belong. But I didn't, I woke up in the same four poster I fell asleep in last night.
I look at the trunk still sat beside my bed, I didn't have the energy to unpack anything last night. Without getting off my bed, I pull open the trunk and retrieve my uniform. Grey jumper with a beautiful blue stitching along the front in a V-shape. White blouse with a striking blue tie, grey skirt and grey socks. Shiny, polished black shoes and a boring black robe.
I brushed my golden locks, pulling it into a neat braid, which fell down my back perfectly. It was early so I wasn't surprised when none of the other girls were awake. I crept out the door and like a zombie down the steps. Only a few older Ravenclaws were awake, that I could see anyway.
I stood in the centre of the common room that was always perfectly described by my Mother, but she seemed to underrate its beauty.
It is a wide, circular room with graceful arched windows that punctuate the walls which were hung with blue and bronze silks and a midnight blue carpet covered in stars, which is reflected onto the domed ceiling. It wasn't small and suffocating but extremely airy.
I had always imagined myself standing in it, guessing the answer to the changing questions. I am now fulfilling that dream only I am alone. I shouldn't be sad; I know but I can't help that I am.
The fact I hadn't touched my food since breakfast didn't help, my stomach was roaring with hunger. On my way to the great hall, I only got lost twice. Pretty great if you ask me, considering the place was a maze.
The huge doors stood open and my eyes flickered to the lonely Ravenclaw table. There were only two older girls sitting down and they seemed lost in conversation. I don't know why but for some reason I was hopeful my friends would be sitting there, waiting for me. With a sigh, my eyes fell to the floor as I made my way to the hot food.
"Jess!" an all too familiar voice called from my left. I shot my head in the direction and there he was, the pale, golden haired boy. I smiled in relief and directly across from his sat Eddie and Win. I quickly staggered over to the trio and took a seat beside Sting. Up close his hair was messier than usual, his golden curls were falling messily on his forehead.
I scoffed the food as if I'd never eaten before. Maybe this won't be all bad. Not even 10 minutes later the Great Hall began to pack up with students.
The boys were laughing at something didn't hear, but I couldn't help but look at the different coloured ties. It felt strange to me, since we'd always been in the same school and wore the exact same thing.
My thoughts were pulled when a dumpy little witch with flyaway grey hair who wore a patched, frayed hat and shabby robes approached. "Excuse me, other houses are not permitted to sit at an unassigned table. Please make you way back to your own house." The stumpy witch tapped my shoulder, pointing at the three outcasts.
I hadn't noticed till now but all the other Hufflepuffs were staring at us, and a few other wandering eyes from different houses. I stood up slowly, slightly embarrassed. The other two mimicked my actions.
"See you later?" my eyes darted between the three boys. "Yes around lunch time maybe?" Eddie nodded. We all nodded and headed towards our own houses.
