"daddy says that they don't grow in the sunlight,"
luna explained as you walked by her side to your next potions class.
"really? i never knew that. you keep me smart, lovegood."
luna smiled and nodded approvingly before entering the class,
every inch of good emotion draining from your body. you sighed heavily and took a seat,
slouching as your eyes scanned the blackboard.
"god... i'd rather fail all my o.w.l.s and get kicked out of hogwarts entirely before i suffer through another one of his classes."
"i think it's an interesting class. professor snape seems like a misunderstood man."
"oh luna. you see the good in everyone, don't you?"
"everyone has good in them."
"you think so?"
"oh yes."you began divulging into your assignment,
realizing you might've messed up a simple instruction only a few minutes in.
your assumptions were confirmed from the cold voice beside you,
"l/n, maybe if you weren't so caught up in being the center of attention, you'd notice the instructions specifically say to add two leaves of the mandrake, not four."
"sorry professor, it's kind of hard to read from back here."
"full of excuses. how extraordinarily like your brother, y/n. strutting around like you own the castle, acting as if classes aren't important to you. you're a true l/n at heart."
"that's me sir,"
you shrugged,
squinting your eyes to see the board better.
professor snape stood there with his lip curled for another few seconds,
then turning on his feet to examine everyone else's potion.
"did i do this right?"
you asked as you scratched the back of your neck,
comparing the consistency of your liquid to luna's.
"did you stir it three times clockwise than once counterclockwise?"
"...was i supposed to?"
"mhm."
she nodded.
you laughed and shook your head,
"i'm terrible at potions."
"that, you are,"
professor snape agreed once more from behind your shoulder,
looking inside your cauldron with disgust.
"not any chance you'd offer me a redo?"
you smiled hopefully.
with the wave of his hand,
all the contents in your cauldron disappeared.
"get out of my class, y/l. you're embarrassing yourself."
"right,"
you nodded and leaned over to pick up your bag.
you reached the door before remembering the bubble of ink you placed on snape's desk in an attempt to prank him.
you'd just barely escaped a detention,
if the bubble popped on him you were sure to be suspended.
you turned on your feet to go and retrieve the god-awful prank you planned,
but you were stopped.
"didn't i tell you to leave?"
"yes but i-"
"five points from gryffindor. the longer you're here, the more i'll deduct from your house. leave!"
and without another word,
you skipped towards the door in a hurry.snape found his way to his desk and examined the odd bubble placed on top,
sticking his wand through it.
it exploded,
black ink flying everywhere.
"wicked,"
fred and george grinned at each other,
knowing exactly who placed the prank there.
"who did this?!"
snape yelled,
everyone growing quiet.
"this was the l/n girl wasn't it?! wasn't it?!"
nobody spoke,
nobody made a sound.
everyone liked you,
so of course they wouldn't snitch.
everyone suppressed their laughs as an angry snape, covered head to toe in ink, fumed with anger.you were well known throughout each house and had a fair few friends,
but never considered yourself insanely close with anyone with the exception of luna.
you two had been childhood best friends.
if anyone knew you, it was luna lovegood.you then reached the common room and sat near the window,
looking out towards the horizon.
you were beginning to miss home.
but home wasn't home anymore.
what was once a happy home with a loving mother and father and older brother,
was now gone.
your father had died,
which sent your brother into a craze.
all that was left was your mother,
who barely had an inch of life in her.
at a constant battle with her own emotions,
she still continued to love you and wrote to you as often as she could.
every now and then you'd see a tear stain on the parchment she sent and your heart would twist in pain,
hating that you couldn't be there for her.the days your father had first died,
and your brother went missing shortly after,
had been the worst days of your life.
you began to remember each night spent quietly sobbing,
clenching onto your blanket for breath.
wishing that life was different,
that you were happy.
you remember luna stroking your hair as you wailed into her lap,
her soft voice whispering words of advice.
from that day forward,
you told yourself you'd make everyone as happy as possible so they didn't have to feel the same pain you did.
even if that meant risking your own freedom.
most of your days were now spent in detention,
but it was worth it hearing the collected laughter in the room."you're so going to be expelled! you should've seen the old gits face! red!"
ron exclaimed as he sat across from you,
snapping you out of your thoughts.
"huh?"
"the ink bubble! it was genius, truly. how'd you do it?"
"a magician never reveals their greatest secrets now, ronald."
he laughed along with you.
"looks like your weekends are filled,"
hermione frowned as she handed you a note.
once you retrieved it from her,
she turned on her feet and left.
"detention for every saturday this semester
-professor snape."
you rolled your eyes and leaned against the windowsill,
the sensation cooling your once burning cheek.
"i swear he has got to be the most miserable man ever."
"you got that right."
"truly. anyways, where's harry?"
"with dumbledore."
"ah,"
you nodded and began to work on your homework.
but shortly after, you were interrupted.
"you must be the famous y/n l/n."
you looked up from your work to see two identical looking boys towering over you,
hair as fiery as rons.
"that i am. you must be the weasley twins that i'm in such competition with,"
you joked.
"compete no more, y/n!"
"we're offering you the offer of a lifetime."
"this can't be good,"
ron groaned from across the table,
earning a smack on the back of the head from fred.
"continue,"
you nodded.
"how would you like to become our friend?"
you scanned their faces and giggled,
"you're serious? that's your big offer?"
"it's not everyday the weasley twins accept newcomers into their friend group."
one explained,
the other nodding in agreement.
"matter of fact, it doesn't happen at all! but we've decided to make an exception for you."
you shrugged,
"yeah, alright. you two sound like a lot of fun."
"great!"
george exclaimed and took a seat next to you,
fred following his actions.
"you can start your initiation by completing our homework for us."
fred winked.
"oh please. it's a miracle to even get mine done. are you sure i'm the person you want to ask?"
"it's a shame, george."
"truly is a shame, fred."
"thought we finally met a funny, smart, and beautiful girl all in one. turns out she's just beautiful,"
fred sighed dramatically.
your cheeks began to turn a shade darker,
your laugh ringing throughout the common room.
"i appreciate the compliments, fellas."
"so it's true?"
fred began,
"you're stupid?"
george finished with a feigned frown.
"yeah, right! you should see y/n's marks! that woman is full of information,"
ron scoffed.
"oh! a turn of events,"
fred smirked.
"nose down,"
you smiled at the boy to your left,
turning your attention back to the parchment in front of you.
fred's eyes followed yours,
landing on the page you were studying.
"the answer is two strands of unicorn hair by the way,"
fred answered with a wink,
getting up to leave the common room.
"i'm sorry about them! they're-they're complete nutters!"
ron sighed loudly once they were out of earshot.
"looks like it,"
you smiled,
writing "two strands of unicorn hair." on your parchment.
