A/N: I don't know how I got 1k but shii THANK YOU
This story has and always will be just for fun and not for it to become popular, which is,, kinda happening? Woah
I'm sorry I haven't updated in forever though. On top of schoolwork and personal issues, I just haven't been able to write a chapter? If that makes sense. Buut something special for you guys!
How Kuzuryu and Peko met ☺️ at least in my story, anyway. Just thought this would be an interesting concept for 1k! I'll be doing more chapters like this for each milestone, so if there is certain content you'd like to see, let me know! It's not just limited to this story ;)

???'s POV:

People suck, we really do.
We suck so much that our outlet for entertainment is violence.
A strong way to start off my thoughts, I'm sure. If anyone could be listening in on this, they'd be confused already. But what I think is true: the human race is shit.
Maybe that's why I do what I do, huh?
My grip on the cold leather of this large handle was painfully tight. My knuckles were white from the pressure I applied, the rest of my hands as red as a cherry. It is winter, after all, and my job is all year round required.
With each gentle fall of snowflakes that hit my face and other exposed skin made it more numb than it already was. Now, back to that handle,
the handle of this wretched weapon. The weapon that has dug into so many lives. And soon to be this meekly life that was sprawled out on the ground below me.
The boy's hair was a dusty blonde and littered with fallen snow. His cheeks were as flushed as mine were from the severe weather. His clothes were tattered from struggle and he had lost a shoe in the pursuit I initiated. His name was Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, he was my age, around fifteen years old.
Of course, this was my job, it was what my family did.
We killed and slaughtered when paid to. This boy was my target.
We never did this alone. We usually hunted down our target in a minimal pack of four, at the most eight, depending on who we were to take out. The rest of my group was currently catching up, I could hear their footsteps from afar crunching in the snow.
"Please..."
My full attention was returned to my game. I could still see him through my mask that I wore on every hunt, for identity purposes. In a way it gave me comfort that the people I took away from this world couldn't even see the face who did it, as if it made me innocent. This entire time I had him cornered on the ground, nowhere to run, he kept his arm up in front of him as if it'd save him.
He did not say any further words. That simple plea, however?
Broke me. I made a quick, impulsive choice out of pure empathy towards this boy and hatred towards myself.
He was still a human.
"Shut up."
I hissed. I hastily shoved my sword in my sheath I had strapped to my back. Those footsteps of my comrades were gaining in volume, they were getting louder, closer. I threw the boy's missing shoe down at him. I grabbed it at some point during my chase.
He looked to me with the same fear, but an added hint of curiosity and confusion. I yelled in the most quiet whisper tone I could.
"Put it on!"
His quick yelp alarmed me. I was afraid that the others in my party heard, making it easier to locate us. That meant that they'd be easily able to locate us through this blizzard of hell.
Could we even run anymore? The harsh cold had pretty much rendered us both as numb as could be.
I looked down to his foot, and good, he had his shoe on. There was no time for chit chat. So, I leant down and...

Kuzuryu's POV:

My entire body was hoisted upwards and forwards in a swift, startling motion. The only thing that kept me conscious in this immense cold was my heartbeat that went so, so quick, from the adrenaline and fear created by THIS woman.
Well, actually, I'd say girl, she's fairly small and her voice sounds young.
But she...she is helping me out of nowhere. Suddenly, she's aiding me in possibly escaping, or maybe she's returning to her squad of killers. When I first encountered them there were three other larger men, with her in front. She had given chase immediately, leaving them behind her in her dust. The snowy dust.
I watched her rip off the terrifying mask she had worn the entire time we'd been running, throwing it in a different direction. It shockingly made a louder noise than I thought it would. What would the purpose of that be?
I knew exactly why these people were after me, I knew exactly who they were as well. They were practically assassins, anybody who paid good would give them a target and they'd execute with a 100% success rate.
Me? My family was in the drug paraphernalia dealing business, and I was the heir to lead next in the large business. They never even used the word "drugs", they used, "products" and "goods" to sugarcoat the severity of our work. These killers were hired to execute me, the next to lead, probably due to one of our orders falling through and the other party wanted revenge.
The dealing business was no joke. Dangerous and ruthless, it was.
I was brought out of my thoughts when I felt a violent tug on my shoulder.
"Hey, are you listening? We need to go!"
The girl spoke quietly but the seriousness in her tone was evident. I didn't have time to collect myself nor my thoughts, no time to ask questions, I barely had time to answer, as we had already began making our supposed getaway. This could still be a trap she had planned out.
"O-okay!"
I spoke as clearly as I could, reflecting the whisper she spoke in. Her throwing her mask suddenly made sense; it was a distraction to give us time to flee. But where would we?—
"Where are we going? This is basically the middle of nowhere! There's only snow for basically miles!"
I spoke up, earning a glare from the assassin. She looked back ahead and answered me.
"Not exactly!"
We were losing speed and energy. Well, I was, I suppose she slowed down with me, thinking it wouldn't hurt. Until we heard the shouting of aggressive men. The others that were previously with her.
"Stop!"
Her hand latched on to my wrist harshly and she ran as fast as we could, dragging me along. I had no room to protest, my life was potentially saved by her. And, come to find, she was correct. Soon enough a narrow road came into view, along with a few stores along the side of it. It looked like the beginning of a town, seeing the turn off road. She spoke my exact thoughts.
"We're gonna run into that town there, lose them there!"
With the speed we ran at, we had to exclaim each sentence spoke. It was hard to talk normally at this rate, we almost had to yell at this point. I spared a glance behind us and was satisfied to see no sign of the three men, though I'm sure they are still on our case. With how quickly the snow fell, our tracks would be covered before they even saw the road. I heard my savior talk again.
"We're gonna cut between that drug store and other local store, right there, just in case."
Though our situation remained tense, we slowed pace while crossing the road and cutting between the two buildings just as she said to. As expected, we were greeted with a small town. It looked old, but it was bustling with as much activity as you'd expect on a snowy day. Her grip on me remained, but never loosened, she never let go even when we stopped in inspect our surroundings. She led me to a sidewalk, walking quickly along, looking at the buildings as we went. We stopped in front of a tall building that was covered with windows, a large entrance with double doors at the center. The large sign that hung above the entrance read "Quick Inn". Odd title for an establishment. But clearly, this is where she planned on staying. For a while, at least.
We entered the building, walking into a large, homey lobby. A large front desk with a young man sitting in a chair in front of a computer was placed at the far end of the room, between two sets of stairs on either side. He took note of our appearance, offering the most bullshit facade to us.
"Welcome to quick inn! Let's see, room for two, yes? We have both a family special and couple special discount for this week only, a 30% off offer. Take advantage, it's a seasonal deal!"
It was so painfully scripted and force that I even saw the girl beside of me cringe. With how we were positioned, her hand still gripped around my wrist, and our lack of similarities, I could see which discount she would pick. Unless she paid full price.
"Uh, couples discount, please. How much?"
The man clicked around on his keyboard and leaned towards his computer screen, squinting his eyes. He turned back to us with the biggest grin.
"That'll be $34.99 please! Tax included, of course."
Once more, she cringed. This time due to the high price, most likely, she dug through her pocket and pulled out a small, metal looking wallet, snapping it open and pulling out a few bills, along with a few coins for tax. She put the money on the counter and slid it forward, and he took it gladly. So greedy.
"Ah, thank you! Now, let's see what room you'll be getting tonight, yes? Alright,"
His chatty demeanor almost hurt me. He handed us a key with a leather tab on it that read "233B". She inspected it before handing it to me. The man at the desk spoke up once more, and I swore then and there he'd be dead someday with that ridiculous tone.
"You can either take the stairs to my left or right, or enter the elevator down the hall to my left. Have a nice stay!"
She only nodded and pulled me behind her towards the hall. I was secretly grateful, my legs couldn't take any more walking.
She pressed the arrow pointing up on the wall, and we waited. I don't know why, but she still hadn't let go of my wrist, not even loosen her hold on me at all. I was naturally afraid to point this out, she could still kill me.
Wait, why didn't that man point out the weapon on her?...I don't even care. I can't care.
The metal doors retracted into the sides of the wall, and we entered. This is where she released me. I almost released a relieved sigh, tension leaving my stiff shoulders. The awkward tension between us made for a very uncomfortable five minute elevator ride up to our floor, which was only the second floor, but this was a slow elevator.
About twenty minutes passed and we had managed in that time to find our room and attempt to settle in.
I expected as much to only be one queen sized bed in the center of the room, top part against the wall. We did get a couples special discount after all. What luck.
"So, uh..."
Shit? I didn't mean to do that, I didn't mean to talk— why did I say anything?
The girl's eyes were now on me. She looked at me expectantly for me to continue. What was I even gonna say? Why didn't you kill me? What's your name?
Well actually, those sound like reasonable questions to start with.
"What...changed?"
This appeared to catch her off guard. She looked around at anywhere but me, pulling off her strapped on sheath with her weapon in it and setting it on top of a dresser. Nobody used those things in places like this, they're mainly for show.
A sigh escaped her lips. She sat on the bed, where I was, right next to me.
"I don't like what I do."
I'm sure that was the only thing on that topic that I was getting out of her. I scratched my neck out of nervous habit, fear remaining strong in my mind. She was the one who almost took my life. Might as well know what she goes by.
"What's, uh, your name?"
She looked to me finally after what seemed like forever. I thought we'd never make eye contact again for the rest of that night.
She held her hand out to me, offering a handshake. I took it.
"Peko Pekoyama."
