There was a popular story of a game. More specifically, a game show. A game show broadcasted live on every television in every home, to every person, to display sick amounts of despair and hopeless souls who were trapped in the false comfort of a high school. How despair?
It was ruthless, brutal. Kill to be released, only to face a disgusting world full of just that exact word, Despair. Of course, this was only a story; fiction. Simply fiction. But that...That is what I felt. Despair.
I'm Shuichi Saihara. And the tall building in front of me, as wide as it was in height, was what created my despair.
A sick churning in my stomach created an odd acid build up in the back of my throat, threatening to deliver a humiliating scene to anyone nearby. My blood ran cold thinking of what was inside; torture, enemies, chaos, the thought of even existing inside that supposed school made me dizzy. I was afraid I might die, I could die, I could-
"Hey, Shuichi! Looks like you showed up after all!"
Oh, was that her? She was a few minutes late compared to what she had told me. I turned my head and pivoted around on my heel to face the familiar figure.
"O-oh, hey Kaede."
"Are you worrying so much again? You know that will only land you in trouble. You're gonna be late for our first class if you just stand there staring at the entrance!"
I've known Kaede Akamatsu for quite some time now, I'd consider her to be a pretty good friend of mine. She's very lighthearted and bold all at once, which is why she is so ready to face this school head on. No, this is not some torture school where we all die, it's just normal academy facility. I scratched my temple nervously and chuckled a tad bit.
"I suppose, I guess I'm just nervous for my first day. I only know a select few others here."
Kaede huffed and shook her head, urging me to walk alongside her to the front doors of the school as she talked.
"If you think like that you might forget you even know anyone here. Don't worry, we got you! Kaito told me he thought he saw you just standing there but didn't go over because he didn't want to be wrong."
Kaede pushed one of the glass doors open and I pushed the other, stepping inside with the slightest stumble in my step. She was right, no sense in overthinking the first day of high school. It was packed full of other people wandering the halls, all trying to find their classes or their dorms. I was lucky enough to get a dorm to myself. Not that I mind if another person had been paired with me, it just sounds easy to start off with. I can be a bit messy anyway, whoever could have been put in my dorm with me was spared messes to clean. I used to be neat and tidy, but that ended a while ago when I let myself go little by little. Obviously, I'm better now.
"Speaking of, that's him over there."
I pointed for a second, long enough for Kaede to see where I was pointing. She smiled, leading me through the dozens of kids towards our friend. Kaito Momota was another good friend of mine, always referring to me as his sidekick whenever he got the chance to. Probably because he got himself into a lot of trouble fairly often and I'd bust him out of it. Very suiting I guess.
"Hey, you two! I knew it was Shuichi standing like a pole out there, sorry for not saying anything man."
"It's okay, it's not like very many people were out there. I got here a bit later than everyone else."
Kaito laughed, patting my shoulder with a heavy hand. Kaito was in no way muscular, he had about the average muscle a guy his age should have, I was simply weaker and a little bit smaller than he was. That didn't stop Kaito from training and dragging me into his antics while he was at it. We started recently, so clearly it hadn't really done much to our physical appearance yet. I'm not sure if it ever will honestly. It had always been that way since we were younger.
Kaito and Kaede began to talk and laugh at random things I didn't really listen to, which I was okay with. I was more focused on a boy dressed in white with a checkered scarf, peaking his head out from a door entrance and looking around. Now that I examined closer, he was in one of the girl dorms. That couldn't be good at all, especially with the devious grin spread across his pale face. The shorter boy slipped out of the room along the wall with a posture that screamed suspicious. He was heading my way.
I was too busy staring down the boy with purple hair to check back on where I had last seen him, which soon turned into chaos. Two separate girls shouted and screamed,
"KOKICHI OUMA!!"
"You DEGENERATE MALE! Get your ass BACK here!"
I, Shuichi Saihara, was now the apparent guard of the short trouble maker, who had taken shelter behind me, and these two furious girls were still charging at me.
This will be a great first day, full of despair.—
