"Darling wake up. Melanie it's time to get ready for the dance."

"Mom?"

"Yes sweetheart. How do you feel? Miles told me you nearly collapsed again last night. Why didn't you tell me you were having symptoms again?"

"Mom I am fine."

"First thing next week we are going back to that specialist. No ifs ands or buts"

"Alright mom. Right now I have to get ready. Declan will be here in a couple hours."

"I'll leave you to it" my mom walks towards the door but before exiting she mentions "Mel before you get swept up in this fairytale please get ahold of Miles he was very worried about you."

"I will mom thanks."

I grab my phone and message Miles

"Miles I am awake if you want to come over."

"Heck yes I will be right over."

I quickly go across the hall to the bathroom to take a shower real quick before Miles arrives. Once finished I wrap myself around the towel and throw my hair up in another towel before running back to my bedroom. I open the door and terrified to find Miles is in my room laying across my bed.

"Miles! What the heck are you doing?"

"Mel you invited me over?"

"How did you get here so fast?"

"I slept on the couch downstairs?"

"Well that makes a lot of sense. Get out so I can get dressed."

"I can't wait to see you in the dress I picked out little devil."

"Out" I throw yet another pillow towards Miles.

Miles grins as he closes the door.

I met Miles when we were in Kindergarten and we have been best friends ever since. We did everything that other best friends did. We went skating, watched movies and even had sleepovers. I may be a bit naive but my friendship with Miles is as normal as they get. I can't help but laugh at the time we were nine, my parents decided it would be best if Miles and I no longer have sleepovers and I for one was heartbroken. Out of some grace of God we were able to talk my parents into allowing Miles to sleep on the couch in the living room instead of my room. The arrangement would have worked well if Miles didn't decide to sneak back into my room anyways. I remember begging my parents to allow Miles to continue staying over even after breaking the rules. The best compromise my parents could agree on was to switch out my queen size bed for two twin size beds and place them on opposite sides of my bedroom. Miles being the evil genius he is he came up with the idea to put our beds together. After the twin beds couldn't keep us apart we were all back to square one, Miles had to sleep on the couch in the living room. There are times even now that Miles still manages to come to my room to keep me company. Now that my mom switched to working nights and comes home very early in the morning it makes it nearly impossible to not get caught. A lot of times I tend to hang out with Miles in the living room until we both pass out.

After finishing blow drying my hair, I then decide to curl my hair. I like the simple and elegant look. I put on my foundation and a little red lipstick in hopes of a dramatic effect. I slip on my dress and I get frustrated because I am unable to zip it all the way up.

"Mel you are taking forever. The dance starts in 30 min." Miles yells through the door

" ugh! I am about finished. I can't seem to zip up my dress!." I yell back.

"I can help if you would like." Miles offers as he opens the door. Miles stops in his tracks as I turn around.

"Mel you look beautiful."

"Yeah, yeah come on and help me already."

"Of course." Miles coughs before approaching me. Miles instructs me to lift my hair up showing my bare back. He grabs the zipper and starts to pull up. I can feel as his breathing quickens.

"Mel I don't know what Declan has done to deserve you but he sure is lucky."

"Miles can you stop saying that he is just a friend."

"You never went all out for me before." Miles says looking disappointed.

"You never asked me to a dance before either."

"Touché Mel. Promise to save me a dance?"

"I promise"

I look out the window and see Declan is here right on time. I turn around and see that Miles was already gone. I make my way outside and towards Declan's car when my mom stops me.

"Melanie sweetheart wait."

"Mom what's wrong."

"Nothing I wanted to say goodbye and be safe tonight."

"I will mom. I love you."

"I love you."
