Miles POV

Three dreadful weeks have passed and there has been no sign that Mel is going to wake up anytime soon. Mel's mom went back to working nights the majority of the time and some days to earn some extra money. She is working extra hours to keep her mind off of Mel being in the hospital. We rotate on staying in the hospital to ensure someone is always with Mel. I even skipped school a handful of times but Declan has been nice enough to bring my homework to the hospital.

My dad is furious that I have let school sit on the back burner but he is away most of the time anyway so he doesn't have a say so in the matter. My mom has tried to be understanding and I know she wants what is best for me but I can't help that my heart is here.

"Mel I can't wait until you wake up. Second semester started and we actually have a couple of classes together. Lucky for you Mel you no longer have to wait until lunch to see me."

I wait for a response but all I hear are the machines and her breathing in the room. How can she be so close and yet so far away.

"Mel if you can hear me please come back. You are too young to have to go through this. You have a birthday coming up. Did you remember?"

I am alarmed by some background sounds I look over to the door and see a nurse.

"Mr Whitmore I am the nurse on duty this evening. Is there anything I can do for you?"

"We are good. Thank you." I say knowing very well neither of us are but I can't let either of us be a burden.

The nurse nods her head and continues down the hall to her other patients.

I grab the pillow and blanket that I brought from home and began to get the recliner situated for the evening. I reach over and kiss Mel's forehead before saying  "Goodnight Mel I love you."
