Bethany"s POV

There I stood in utter disbelief. My mouth gaped open. I was at lost of speech. No words could describe the way I was feeling towards my dad. I gave Derek a helpless glance, which he returned with a discouraged slight smile.

"I know you have been on the road for hours, so why don't I get you a bite to eat or something," My mom asks Derek quickly making up an excuse to get both of them out of the room.

"Thank you," Derek mouths to my mother as he follows my mother into
the kitchen.

As they are walking back, my mom flashes my dad a discerning look of disappointment.

I abruptly cross my arms, "What was that even about?"

"What do you mean?" my dad replies with a innocent look.

"You literally just blew off my boyfriend. I mean your lucky he hasn't practically ran away," I retort pursing my lips in a straight line.

"You're being ridiculous Bethany."

"Are you sure I'm the one being ridiculous," I mutter under my breath.

My dad sighs impatiently as his eyes uneasily make there way across the floor.

"Look-," my dad begins.

"Dad wait.." I say interrupting him coldly.

"Please don't act this way." I sigh. "You know how strongly I feel about Derek and my love for him." "Can you please just try for me?" I plead staring into his eyes.

My dad doesn't reply to my suggestion. He simply stare at me with an unconvincing look and mumbles something under his breath.

" I thought you of all of people would be there for me," I harshly retort as I shake my head in disbelief.

Derek"s POV

Saying the the whole situation was "awkward" was an understatement. It was beyond awkward. All throughout dinner I had felt Bethany"s dad staring right through me. Anytime I would make the slightest comment he would make a disapproving grunting noise.

Bethany instantly sensed my discouragement and gently placed her hands in mine with a warm smile.

"Well I think this has been one night, hasn't it," Bethany"s dad comments with a smirk as he rises from the table."

Bethany's face immediately turns into a frown.

"C'mon you can't pass on my special blueberry nut bread," Tammy says attempting to lure him to stay..

"I think I will just wait on the leftovers,' he says nonchalantly.

I watch as his eyes soon trail to mine and he flashes me a deep glare.

Bethany and her mother quickly give me a glance of sympathy .

All night I had made copious aims at trying to get Bethany's father to warm up to me. However anything I did, would end in that same" look of doubt." When it comes to parents, I am usually an expertise, But this time was different.

"Derek, are you okay?," Bethany asks, breaking my deep trance.

"Me?... Oh... I am fine,"  I mutter quickly.

"Don't worry okay, he will eventually have to warm up to you. All it's going to take is some.. time," she says reassuringly.

I look at her helplessly, unconvinced by her words.

"If you excuse me, I need to use the..err..bathroom," I abruptly say cutting the conversation off.

As I slowly walk down the long corridor and turn the corner to where the bathroom and living room meet, I see something I don't expect to see.

There he is sitting on the couch. Bethany's father holds a picture frame of Bethany from her younger days. He focuses on the picture in complete daze

"She is adorable isn't she?" I mumble, intentionally not realizing it.

Bethany's Dad turns to look at me and turns back to focus on the photo.  "Yeah she was and is adorable,' he chuckles slightly.

For a moment, we both stand there lingering, not sure of what to say.

"They grow up so fast. One day they will be in your arms begging you to never let go...., next thing you know , there gone," he says faintly.

That's when the whole situation starts to clear up for me. He doesn't hate me. It just pains him to see his daughter  grow up so fast/

"She loves you, you know that," I finally  say.

"What?," he asks me with a puzzled look.

"Bethany-- She loves you, and nothing will ever change that fact,' I add.

He looks at me for the first time that day, not with a frown but a smile.

He sighs, "It's just one of the hard jobs that come with being a parent, letting go." "She is my little girl.

He stares down at the floor for a while and looks as if he is about to say something.

"You know Derek, your a good guy......, and you make my daughter very happy. and I want to thank you.

I give a small smile."Well I want to thank you for taking part in the creation of such a beautiful woman," I say with a chuckle.

He laughs, "I know it didn't appear before but I am truly grateful.
