The next morning...
"You'll have to forgive Remus, it takes his toll under his condition," Mr. Weasley exclaimed. Him, Harry and I were all in the shed, looking through muggle tools and devices Mr. Weasley had collected.
"How are you doing, Mr. Weasley?" Harry asked. "We're being followed, all of us. Most days Molly doesn't leave the house; it's not been easy," he sighed. "Did you get our owl?" I asked him. "In fact I did. If Dumbledore's traveling, then that's news to the Ministry, but perhaps that's how he wants it to be," he exclaimed.
"As for Draco Malfoy, I know a bit more,"
"go on," I said, eager to find out what he was up to.
"I sent an agent to Borgin and Burkes. I think, based on the information you told me, that the object Draco is so very interested in is a Vanishing Cabinet,"
"What's that?" I asked curiously.
"They were all the rage when You Know Who first rose to power. Should the death eaters come knocking, one would simply slip inside, and disappear for an hour or two," he exclaimed. "It can transport you practically anywhere, tricky contraptions though, very temperamental."
"What happened to it? The one in Borgin and Burkes?" Harry asked.
"Nothing, it's still there," Mr. Weasley said.
"Why would Draco go to one in Borgin and Burkes, then mess around with one inside Hogwarts?" I asked.
"Perhaps to get something inside the castle, who knows,"
"Or someone," I muttered.
"Lunch!" Mrs. Weasley yelled out the front door. "You two best be going then, I'll meet you inside," he waved us off. Harry and I sat down at the table next to Ginny, Ron, Fred and George. She handed us each a grilled cheese. "Thank you," I smiled. "Of course, dear."
December 25th, Christmas Day
"Happy Christmas," Ginny smiled, waking me up. We all scurried downstairs for presents in our pajamas. "Happy Christmas, Dad," I gave him a big hug. "Happy Christmas, Ron, Harry," we all sat under the tree. We each grabbed our gifts, opening them one by one. Dad gave me a silver bracelet with a butterfly charm, and Mrs. Weasley made everyone knit cup holders to keep our hands warm.
Lupin and Tonks would be coming over for Christmas dinner. We spent the day in the living room, playing a huge game of Monopoly. Mr. Weasley had found it in the Muggle Items section of the Ministry, and I taught everyone how to play.
"Nice one Harry, you've just got yourself stuck in jail," I snorted. "Shut up," he angrily moved his piece to the jail tile. A few of the pieces had been missing, so we'd gotten creative. I used the bell on Lorelei's collar, Ginny used a charm from her necklace, Ron used a pen spring, and so on.
We played for hours, the smell of Christmas ham making our mouths water as Mrs. Weasley cooked in the kitchen. Ginny and I had baked Christmas cookies the night before. The radio in the background played the muggle Christmas channel, and the fireplace crackled quietly in the background.
Eventually dinner rolled around, and we all set the table, then put food on our plates. "Thank you for cooking, Mrs. Weasley," Harry smiled. "Of course my boy, I hope you all enjoy it," she smiled as she scooted her chair in, Lupin and Tonks dried their shoes on the doormat, then placed their scarves on the hanger.
They sat down at the table, as we all began to eat our meal. The stars twinkled outside the window, sparkling Christmas lights lining the windows, the smell of pine filling my nostrils as garland twisted it's way around the stair railings.
Eventually, dinner was over, and Fred, George, Harry, Ron, Ginny and I all made our way back to the living room to finish our game of Monopoly. "What is it Remus?" I heard Mrs. Weasley say from the door. All of us turned to the window, peeking outside. Lupin was staring out into the fields.
"Everybody DOWN!" he yelled, ushering us further inside. "AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS," he yelled. "What's going on?" I asked, standing next to my Dad. Before he could answer, a large cloud of smoke pummeled towards the field, circling the house in a ring of fire. A death eater came sprawling down, landing right in front of the house window. Bellatrix.
"Oh my god," I whimpered, my Dad holding me close. Harry ran out the door, chasing after her. "HARRY, NO," We all screamed, as he jumped over the flames chasing her into the fields. "GINNY!!!" Mr. Weasley screamed as she went after him. "I have to do something," I shrieked, my heart nearly beating itself out of my chest. "Stay inside," Dad commanded me.
"We have to help," I yelled to Ron. "They could be here to kill you, Caroline, get down," he stammered, pulling me down behind the couch. I peeked over the top, watching as flames spread through the wild grasses.
Remus, Tonks, Mr. Weasley and my Dad all fought back the flames, running into the fields after Ginny and Harry. Ron and I scrambled up to Mrs. Weasley and the twins, standing huddled to the door. We watched in awe as sparks of white spells shot in the distance, the grass fluctuating at every hit. "WILLIAM," Remus screamed in the distance. Mrs. Weasley held my arm tightly as my heart lurched at my Dad's name.
Before we knew it, two clouds of black smoke were searing through the sky, bursting through the house, setting it into flames. Fred grabbed my arm, practically throwing us out of the way of the explosion. We all stood in awe, watching as the only house the Weasley's had ever known outbroke in flames, collapsing in on itself. The circle had disintegrated, leaving charred smoke encircling around us.
"Where's my Dad," I cried, as Harry and Ginny returned with Mr. Weasley. They stood silent. "WHERE IS MY DAD," I screamed. Tonks returned, tears in her eyes. Fred held onto my arm. That's when I saw him, tucked in Lupin's arms;
his body lifeless, the death eaters gone.
