Chapter Six
Words: 741

I took my task card and headed off to Admin, where Black is about to break the card reader from aggressively swiping his card.
"Are you fucking serious? 'Too fast' my ass, I'll show you fast!" I heard him yell, grunting deeply as the red lights flickered on after each attempt.

I quickly approached him, laying a hand on his shoulder, guiding his arm to use the card reader correctly. The card reader's light then went green, giving me a breath of relief that it still works.
He grunted in response. "I almost had it."

"You almost had to replace another card reader, that's what," I chuckled. I quickly took my hand off of his arm and shoulder, swiping my own card, glancing at my task list.

"Do you have a task in electrical?" I ask, looking up at him, instinctively stepping back as I haven't realized how tall he actually is.

"Are you scared or somethin'?" Black asks.

I squinted at him as I could just feel his condescending smirk underneath his helmet.

"And you're not? The note...it mentioned 'imposters', and I'm not sure what that exactly means but I think we have to be careful," I muttered, my voice growing quieter as he leaned closer to me.
My quick breaths began to fog up my helmet.

"You said 'we' as if you know that I'm not an imposter."

A long moment of silence began between us with me panicking to find the right words and to understand what he just said to me. He isn't...saying that he is, right?
"You'll be fine, just go to electrical," Black says, leaning on the table, flicking my helmet with his fingers.

I held my helmet, my face burning red, as I rushed out of admin, finding myself in storage. I was about to walk out into the hallway that leads to electrical but something caught my eye. I pulled out a cardboard box with black tape keeping it together. I took out my task card in my pocket and used its sharp edge to open the box.
Digging through it, I screamed, my sound echoing throughout the entire ship as I staggered back.

Black and White came first, followed by Orange and Brown. Black stepped in front of me and picked up the suit and dropped it as he realized. Orange came to my side to try and comfort me but covered her mouth as she looked down at the box. Inside is a ripped, pink uniform with old bloodstains with the name tag "Laurent".
"...mom," I managed to say as Orange turned me away from the box, it's stench filling the air with a sharp metallic smell.

I never once thought Unit One actually went MIA and I knew I would never see mom again but...I did not want her death to be like this. Orange shielded me as she took me to the cafeteria, but I could hear Black, Brown, and White start to tear through storage followed by short gasps.
Their parents too...

Orange sat me down at a table and later brought me an apple and a bottle of water.
"Give me your task card, I'll finish yours," Orange assures me, stretching her hand out expectantly.
Seeing my hesitant movements, she took off her helmet, showing her messy brown hair draping over her tranquil face. She took off my helmet as well, cupping my face in her soft hands.

"We're real, okay? None of us are 'imposters': I'm starting to agree with Brown; this 'game' is just something to mess with our heads. One thing we need to have in common with Unit One is trust," Orange says, her voice slightly cracking mentioning Unit One.
I slowly handed her my task card, hugging my knees as I brought the bottled water to my lips. Orange looked back at me with a small smile, putting on her helmet, and walked off, leaving me alone in the cafeteria.

I keep on thinking back to that note, mentioning imposters. Could it be possible that imposters are responsible for the deaths of Unit One—of mom?
"What should I do?" I ask into the empty room, seemingly to mom as if I were to hear a response back.

I put my face in my hands, clenching my hair to stop myself from crying.
"Play the game."
