Chapter 9

Cassandra's POV

As I walked down through the tall leaves of the pine forest slowly nudging them off with my shoulders, I felt that I didn't belong to anyone....

Maybe it was best that way. I hadn't stolen anything, so it was there false accusations that turned me over. Plus, not even Lydia defended me. You'd think she would.

---

After walking until sundown, I heard rustling around the trees. I slunk up a tree to get a better view of the perimeter, It was mostly foliage and a small stream, then I saw a large carriage. It was a slave trader carriage. Since the revolution, authorities had been blunt toward these crimes.

I unsheathed my sword and saw trapped inside, a minator, a dwarf, a wolf, and a ....fire phoenix. I'd always read about fire phoenix’s' they were glorious creatures. They could explode into a blaze of fire whenever they chose and destroy whatever they chose. To me it was like the ultimate horse.

I slowly waited for the carriage to ride up in my direction. I started cutting a dead, thick branch from the top and as soon as the men were under, I finished it off. It dropped from 5 feet above and dropped onto 2 of the 3 slave traders. I saw blood and guessed I'd split there skulls. The other glanced around in horror. I jumped from the tree landing on his back squarely.

I sliced my sword down his back and got up to look at the slaves. They stared at me amazed.

"OI!" I turned to the dwarf standing behind the others. "Las, the key if on the short one."

I glanced around at the one who hadn't been crushed by the branch. I found the key and hurried back to the cell-like carriage. I opened it easily, tossing the key out.

The dwarf and wolf ran out at the same time getting stuck. The minator stuffed his hoof into their backs shoving them out. The minator stared at me but I didn't flinch. Then the phoenix came out and stretched its wings, my eyes widened in amazement.

"Thank you" the minator boomed even though he seemed quiet relaxed. I looked up at him and gave a shaky nod.

"I'm Thorn, that's Algrim, and Drong." he added pointing his large hoof at the dwarf then the wolf.

"I could have stated my own name. Thank you Thorn." came the male wolf's sassy growl.

"Yes but if you had you never would of shut up." Algrim pointed out, grimly. He started walking up the path the others following reluctantly.

"Wait!" I called, "Where are you going?"

"Anywhere...as long as we are away from the revolution." Algrim replied turning around.

"Why do you want to be away from it?" I wondered.

"Because fighting is an ugly thing." Drong chirped from behind Thorn. The fire phoenix had laid down beside Thorn as well. He must be the one that protects them.

"It's something you have to deal with!" I protested.

Algrim shook his head, "The fighting should have ended after the last battle but it didn't and I'm far too old to be fighting."

"But your not old. And you have battle scars. Don't you want to make a difference in Narnia?" I didn't realize what I'd said until I said it. I had so recently been kicked out and I already started thinking I belonged again.

---

The night was dull as the fire roared. Drong and Thorn were asleep at the other side of the fire. I lay curled in the soft feather's that made up the fire phoenix’s' belly. They had agreed to let me stay with them. And we'd agreed to help Narnia under specific terms.
