she did make a difference

The End of an Era!

Over the last two decades the football industry has embraced and let go of a few football icons—a few harder than others—and after her many, many years of service out on the pitch and in court for acts of injustice within football, French player Wynter Reyes has finally decided to hang up her boots (both club and international).

While many are severely disheartened and saddened by this news, others had expected the news to hit them sooner or later. Reyes has been very open with her terminating progress in football—mainly suggesting that there's a minor struggle for her to maintain an equal middle ground between football and motherhood seeing as both herself and her spouse and teammate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, have abroad or international games whilst having three kids at home.

During her final match with Liverpool and for football, Reyes got to play a reasonable seventy minutes before she was substituted off the pitch, instantly receiving a standing ovation and excessive applause from the fans, the players on the pitch and everyone in their respective dugout areas. This ultimately left the player overwhelmed with euphoria and dejection as she took her place in Liverpool's dugout area. She later expressed her feelings about her departure from football after the match saying;

"Honestly, it was a hard decision to make but I think I've come to terms that at this stage of my career and age, I have to set my priority on other significant matters and if that means leaving football then so be it. Of course, I'll still be around but just not on the pitch anymore." — Wynter Reyes to Sky Sports.

Despite her departure from Liverpool and football in general, I think most can agree that the french player has made the most out of her football career with the following:

Wynter Reyes started off her professional career with PSG before going on to be the first woman to claim a Men's World Cup. It wasn't too long before she became the first woman to join a club's male roster (more specifically, Liverpool) and in less than a year after being under the club's name, she helped them to retrieve many titles such as the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and their first Premier League.

After straying away from the English club, she fluctuated between European clubs (one being Juventus where she got to play alongside Paulo Dybala) before returning back to Liverpool for a year where Reyes has decided to conclude her football journey alongside her partner of said years.

Alongside her athletic achievements within the last two decades, Reyes has also given access to other [female] players to achieve their own goals in football—supporting Les Bleues in beating the USWNT to win the Women's World Cup, being the key catalyst for the rise of semi-integrated football and leading the possibility of equal pay amongst women's national teams against their respective male counterparts.

As she explained in her last interview as a football player, Wynter won't completely disappear from neither football (seeing as Trent Alexander-Arnold will presume to play) nor sports in general so let's all hope that we receive some content from the french icon known as Wynter 'Winnie' Reyes.
