You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.” The past is a special thing. Our history is part of what makes us who we are. Before, I used to think of history as, “how the U.S became a nation”, but “our history” are the things we’ve done in the past that make us who we are.
This includes the good, the not-so-right-but-not-terribly-wrong, and the bad. For an example of good, you may have stayed up all night studying for a test and done really well on that test. For the in-between, you may have stretched the truth when telling your friend that you didn’t like anyone when you did. The bad may be things as simple as not reacting right in an argument with a friend or hurting someone else’s feelings by lying to them about something. Whatever your good, in-between, or bad experiences are, they are still part of what makes you special.
History is a magical thing. You can never go back and change history, but you can work towards a better future. Don’t dread the past and constantly dredge up the past. Be who you are and allow yourself to lead the life you truly want. While you cannot change things that have already happened, you can always learn from the past and work to make a better future for yourself.
One step in doing this is allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Vulnerability has always felt like a sort of, nakedness. It’s where you let your shield down and allow yourself to feel and to let others see the real you. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, it’s not saying that you’re weak. If anything, it makes you stronger. There are so many things in the world that we view as weakness. While some can be weaknesses, they can also be strengths. Fear. We view fear as something that makes us weak. But have you ever thought that fear is what makes us stronger? It gives us challenges to overcome. To make us stronger and more confident in ourselves.
History can sometimes have a way of repeating itself. Sometimes the good repeats, and sometimes the bad repeats. Life is a mysterious force that, while we think we have no control over it, our actions and choices we make, are what change the course of our lives. History is driven by our actions, our impulses. The way we react to situations is how our histories are written.
It is part of our stories. Each of us has an individual and special story. We all have our own history. Our own stories to write. So instead of focusing on your history and your past, bask in the fact that you have made it this far. Learn from your past, the last chapter of your life, and work on writing a better future. Work on the next chapter of your life.
