Chapter Twenty-Eight

"Hi, Amber." Nick's mom said to me through the phone line.

I felt the unwanted feeling of deja vu come over me and sink deeply into my stomach.

"Uh, hi." I dreaded it, but I had to ask,"Um, I don't mean to be rude, but why are you calling?"

"Well, I know this might be hard for you to hear, since I know how close you and Nick are, but I have to tell you this." Mrs. Carter explained.

I remained silent for a moment before I spoke and shut my eyes tightly, bracing myself for what was coming next from the phone line.

"Uh, Mrs. Carter, I don't know if you know this, but Nick and I aren't exactly friends anymore. We had a bit of a....falling out."

"Well, yes I know that, but I still think you need to know about this just in case you change your mind.

Mrs. Carter paused, as if she were unsure if she really should've called after all though her words suggested otherwise.. I sighed, telling her, "Well, since you already called, go ahead. I can take it."

I heard a sigh come through from the phone, and then the response I somehow still dreaded.

"Nick was in a bit of a wreck today, and he's not exactly okay..."

I pondered this for a moment before responding.

"What's wrong with him?" I asked.

Well, at first we thougt he was going to be fine, but then he collapsed and the doctor discovered that something was wrong with his heart. Anyways, the bottom line is, they're going to have to perform surgery and the outcome even then is unsure. The doctors say it's possible he might not make it, Amber..." Nick's mother's voice broke. To be honest I was surprised she was able to say all that without bawling.

And actually, I was trying really hard not to cry.

"I think you should consider coming to see him. Before it's too late and you regret it."

I knew she was right, but I was still furious at Nick.

"I'll think about it." I said as dully as possible.

"Don't take too long. His surgery is the tomorrow at noon."

"Alright." I said, and hung up the phone without waiting for a goodbye.

This changed things.
