From the show: The Waltons
You couldn't help but feel disappointed when Ben and you had been trying for a baby for over a year with no such luck. You remembered when you were worrying about it after only 6 months.
"Sometimes these things take time," his mother, Olivia, had tried to gently reassure you. Her words seemed to blow away in the wind though, not lifting your spirits.
You just felt so alone, starting to believe that you were the problem. It had even started putting a strain on your marriage with Ben, which you never saw happening.
One night was especially hard as your feelings were more sporadic than ever. Ben found you out on the front porch, rocking back and forth on the wooden rocking chair that his father had actually built for you to rock your future child to sleep. It had only been 2 years since you got a place of your own, the first year spent in Ben's childhood house, since you had no money to live anywhere else. You had to admit though that it was nice to have other people around constantly to talk to. Out here you felt lonely when Ben went off to work.
"Hey, you alright," Ben checked, but you just stared straight ahead, not sure how to respond. You had had trouble communicating lately.
He pulled up a regular chair to where you sat, gazing out at the night filled with crickets chirping.
"What's wrong with me," you asked suddenly, staring down at your hands that rested in your lap.
"Wrong with you? Why would you think somethin' was wrong with you?" Ben seemed shocked by your comment, but it was far from fresh news to you.
"I'm the reason why we can't have a baby."
"You heard what the doctor said. These things take time..."
"That's what everyone says," you suddenly snapped, turning to face him. "But it just keeps taking longer and longer. There must be something wrong with me!"
"(Y/N), of course there's nothing wrong with you! If anything, there's something wrong with me! Not only can I not give you a child, but I've been a downright awful husband! I didn't even know you felt this way until now."
You shook your head as tears threatened to fall, Ben's face softening as he wrapped his arm around your shoulders, rubbing your opposite arm.
"We'll get through this together, (Y/N), I promise," he vowed.
Another year passed, but this time things were different because you and Ben we communicating again. Then one wondrous day you found out you were finally pregnant. Walton Mountain hadn't been so joyous in ages, celebrating the great news.
Another 9 months passed and you were soon holding not one, but two brand new little Waltons in your arms. It was a girl and a boy, and you had named the girl your favorite name, while the boy had been blessed with being called, Ben Jr. As you gazed up at your husband with tears in your eyes, your babies nuzzling their faces close to you, you couldn't help but see how blessed you had been all along. You just hadn't known it yet.
