Drowning

Gulped, and down went the water,
Freezing as it entered my lungs.
You'd think the shock would wake me,
But it seems my song has been sung.

The panic overtakes me and down,
Deeper and deeper I sink.
Not realizing as I went, that
The edge there was the brink.

My eyes burn from the salt,
And my chest feels tensely tight.
There was a moment that I realized,
This might be my last fight.

As that sense overwhelmed me,
The light grew dimmer and dim.
The whoosh of the last bit of air,
Left and went out on a whim.

There it is, the final feel of drowning,
I always wondered when it would come.
I guess I always thought somehow,
That it would feel more like a drum.

Instead it slipped and slides away,
That life I once had is now gone.
Because before I really knew it,
There was no fight left to live on.
