Driving to the bar, Courtney and her friends chatter, while I plan my escape, in case things get too weird. I don't have enough money to Uber back to Ankeny, so I'll have to call Audrey. Knowing that I have a way out, allows me to relax, as much as I can with Remi's eyes on me.
At the bar, Courtney turns to me as we approach the bouncer, "I know this guy. I'll pay him to let you in."
Flashing my fake, I tell her I got it covered.
Impressed, she gestures for me to walk next to her. "Maybe you're not as prissy as I thought."
I scoff, "Definitely not."
Inside Remi brings me a drink. The layer of liquor that floats at the top smells terrible. Handing it to me, he smiles, "Here I got this for you."
"What is it?" I won't drink it, but I have to ask.
"It's a long island iced tea."
Classy guy. Tring to get me drunk, so he can make his move. Looking down at my drink, I wonder if he's evil enough to put something in it to drug me. Fake sips here and there should keep them off my back.
Heading towards the three girls who are by the pool table, I invite myself in. "I'll be someone's partner."
Courtney bosses her friends, "Dani, you can be my partner. Kayla, you go with Maddie."
A few shots in, Courtney and Dani only have three balls left on the table. Looking down at my glass, I need to head to the bathroom to dump part of my drink to avoid anyone catching on.
When I move that direction, Courtney calls to me. "Maddie...wait up."
Groaning inside, I fake a smile. "Thanks for inviting me tonight."
Courtney shrugs, "I wanted to see if you could be any fun."
Appreciating her honesty, I shrug too. "Fair enough."
Timing it so Courtney finishes before me, I dump my drink as she washes her hands.
Facing the mirror, her eyes look down at my drink as I leave the stall. "You don't drink? But you have a fake. Explain that?"
"I don't want to be rude, but I don't drink things with 5 shots in it. I'd puke in your car." Lying, hoping she won't rat me out to her friends.
"Whatever." Glaring at me, she leaves the bathroom and ignores me for the next two hours.
One shot after another keeps coming. After I denied the first two, they stopped buying me one. Hanging all over Remi, Kayla's captured his attention.
"Let's get out of here. This place is lame." Courtney slurs, as she digs for her keys.
"I can drive." I whisper to her, as we make our way to the car.
Ignoring me, she heads to the driver's side. "Let's go to Jace's apartment. It's closer."
Hanging all over Remi, Kayla's words string together , "As long as you take me back to your apartment before 10 tomorrow. I have to work in the morning."
Giving Courtney a desperate look, but she ignores me. I can't stay the night at Jace's apartment. The thought of sleeping in a smoky haze with these drunk jerks makes me sick.
She planned this, knowing that there's no way for me to get home. Wishing I'd brought my credit card, I pull out the little bit of cash I have in my pocket. It's not enough to get anywhere. Jace only lives about two minutes way from the bar. His building is nicer than Courtney's, yet it's still a dump.
