The next night, on my way to church to meet Audrey for another makeover session, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Reminding myself it's only a concert, I ignore the sick feeling in my stomach.
Smiling at an older gentleman walking out of Church, I slide through the front door before it closes, looking for Audrey. Greeting me with a tight hug, I'm surprised by how happy I am to see her.
Pulling back from me, with watery eyes, she blubbers, "I'm so sorry I didn't answer last night. My phone was at the bottom of my purse. I didn't hear it. Can you forgive me?"
"I've already told you ten times that it's okay. It worked out." I've never met someone so hard to reassure. Like it's her fault I got myself into a mess.
Smiling, Audrey points, "Do you have a big enough makeup bag? That thing is bigger than the suitcase I took on my last vacation. Granted, my last vacation was to my grandma's house for the night."
Smacking her arm, I laugh, "I brought accessories this time along with makeup and styling tools. Are you and Kyle officially dating yet?"
"No." She palms her face.
"What's holding him back?" He definitely likes her. I don't understand why he's being so difficult.
Audrey's cheeks flush. "Promise you won't tell anyone." She looks at me nervously.
I nod. "Who would I tell, if you think about it."
Frowning, she looks at something behind me. "Last fall, in a week moment, Dustin and I..." Trailing off, she puts her face in her hands. "I don't know why I did it."
"Dustin, as in Dustin the one in the band?" I can't picture it. She seems so innocent. "Did you have sex with him?"
"What? No! We didn't let it go that far." She nearly shouts. "Kyle can't get over what we did. He says he feels like he can't trust me. And he thinks about it every time he's with me."
Pulling Audrey towards the bathroom, I feel a rush of determination. "I'll make you look so good that he won't be able to think about anything but you tonight. He's just jealous. Once you prove to him that Dustin means nothing to you, he'll get over it."
"I hope so." She wipes the tears away from her eyes.
Deciding to apply her makeup first, I think about the perfect way to fix her hair. She lets me powder, curl, and spray her to perfection. Giving her a few finishing touches to add to her outfit, along with my favorite perfume that will make her smell, I step back admiring my work.
Turning her towards the mirror, she leans forward touching the three braids on the side of her head, then looks at her face in disbelief. "How do you do that? I've tried to do my makeup at home, but it never looks like that. Can you teach me?"
Moving a hair back into place, I gush, "This is some of my best work yet. You look stunning. I can't wait to see his reaction."
After adding a few finishing touches to my makeup, I stuff everything back into my bag. I can't contain my laughter when I see the serious expression on her face. "The final accessory you need is a smile. You look like you're going to a funeral or something. Why are you so nervous? You just hung out with Kyle last night."
Her gaze drops to the floor. "I just hope this works. What if he can't ever forgive me for what I did."
I close my eyes for a minute, then in all seriousness I say, "Then he's not the guy for you."
Following Audrey out of the bathroom, I run into the back of her. I ask, "What are you doing?" Spotting Kyle over her shoulder, his eyes widen when he sees her.
