Lockdown Day 55
We had pizza delivered as our food for the night.
"I have an idea," Pablo said. "It's actually a business proposal."
Rica and I listened to him as I finished two pizza slices.
His idea was a small startup that'd involve making homemade food, which we'd sell online. He thought of profiting from Rica's kitchen skills. And he meant for it to be her thing that we'd only help out on. It'd give her not only something else to do but something to earn from.
I also know that he's looking for alternative ways of surviving this trying time. He's been a freelancer for months, and the lockdown caused him one project and a significant source of income. He still has a job, but he's also uncertain how long it's going to last.
"Marco can set up a social account and monitor the orders," he went on. "I'll run the errands at the market. And you'll cook them," he nodded at Rica.
The whole house fell silent after he stopped talking.
Then he waited until I met his gaze. He raised his eyebrows and gave me a look that meant he's asking for my opinion.
His idea may work. But he left out one necessary part.
"How about the deliveries?" I asked.
"I'll do it at first," he quickly shrugged. "I'll use your bike and the maps app. We can start locally within a smaller radius. And then we'll expand after, say, two weeks after the trial period. Then we'll arrange deliveries if outside this area."
He really thought this through and was serious about it. I get his enthusiasm, for neither of us had any clue when this kind of life would finally be over. I was also glad that he didn't consider me doing it as an option. I can't let go of my daytime hours allotted for sleeping.
"I like your idea," Rica cheerfully said. "I'll do it. But only if everyone's on board."
Meaning, me.
They needed my verbal confirmation.
"I'm in."
I didn't even want any share of what they'll earn from the whole thing. Having something else to do besides sit down in front of the computer screen or hole up inside that bedroom was already rewarding itself.
Pablo sprinted to and back from his room with a blank piece of white paper in hand. Then he and Rica drafted the plan and division of tasks, wrote them down, and put it on the clipboard at the wall.
It's only then that I realized how the whole thing would work. And I asked myself, what have I just gotten myself into?
