Sophie's POV
"Does he tell her"
"Does he tell her"
"Does he tell her!" I say urgently as I was getting to the climax of the book. I swear the librarians hated me, but I didn't care
"if you must know he does tell her" a deep accented voice interrupts me
"you just ruined it!" I groan finally looking up from my book to see Fitz. My heart started going catatonic and was doing weird flips, it was a sensation I had never felt before, but only happened when I was with Fitz
"you asked," Fitz says sitting in front of me as he shrugged innocently "well technically" this caught my attention
"what do you mean technically" I question curiously, placing my book down and leaning in closer.
"do you want me to ruin it," Fitz says placing down his own book
"well I mean you did already kinda ruin the whole plot so yeah, spill"
"ok so Simon was going to tell Cora, but then Cora falls ill, and Simon then doesn't want to tell Cora because she may die of grief, so he puts it off. Cora gets better and Simon forgets to tell Cora, they live a happy life for a few years until one day Cora gets shot during an ambush. She is at her last dying breaths when Simon decides Cora should know. Simon tells Cora he was the one that murdered Cora's mother, but he had to do it because they would kill Cora if he didn't kill her mother. Cora was surprisingly quiet, and Simon thought she died without knowing the truth but then guess what happens..." Fitz pauses in suspense
"I will literally throw this book at your head of you don't tell me what happens" I threaten holding up the book
"ok, ok, so guess what happens... Cora uses her last dying breaths to say and I quote 'I know. I always have... but I love you and nothing can break that'" Fitz finishes wiping away fake tears
"no way! then she dies!" I say in disbelief
"yep. It was so hard to read" Fitz says clutching his heart dramatically
"I didn't know you were a reader" I question
"wow, you think so low of me," Fitz says mock hurt
"you know what I mean. Thought you were more of the... physical type, like sports, not sappy love novels"
"Yeah, I do like sport, but reading is just like a getaway in life. You know, you can just block out everything in life and get lost in a book" Fitz says
I practically fall out of my chair at Fitz's response. That was literally the reason I read books; to just slip away from reality
"Fitz don't you think it is weird how similar we are. Like you literally steal the words from my mind" I say
Fitz sighs as he slides out a book from his satchel "actually I wanted to show you this before, but I haven't had the chance" he plops the massive book on the table with a thud! The book read 'a cognate relationship'
"what's a cog-nate" I question
"well..." Fitz says shuffling through the pages until he gets to a page that had been doggy earmarked "a cognate is a telepath that you have a special and rare connection built on trust. They are like your other half and know all of their cognates secrets to build the deepest understanding of trust and connection" Fitz reads
"ok..." I prompt him to read
"ok, Sophie, I might understand why we are always finishing each other's sentences. Look, read the criteria for a cognate" Fitz says pointing to a page on the book
"finishes each other's sentences" I read and glance over at Fitz as he gives me a small nod
"work well together. Well I mean you are the only who can get past my mental blocking so yeah" I continue reading
"have a built-in trust, could be from childhood, or after a traumatic experience..." I whisper the last part. Fitz and I fit into the cognate criteria almost perfectly
"Wow... that's freaky" I whisper under my breath, I thought Fitz wouldn't hear but he did
"I know but isn't it totally amazing," Fitz says excitedly
I should be as excited but... there was something about telling him all my secrets that... made my hands clammy and my heart beat a million pulses per second. I didn't know what that secret was, but it pulled at the strings of my heart
Fitz noticed my silence "you're not happy are you" Fitz says sadly
"no Fitz I am happy, to know I have someone to trust" I pause "so you know what... Fitzroy Avery Vacker would you like to be my cognate" I ask
"of course, princess" I slap Fitz lightly on the arm; he knew I hated titles
"so... what does this mean?" I ask
"well... I think this means we are Cognates. I got my father to send over some of his old training booklets" Fitz says shuffling through his satchel and pulling out an overfilled black notebook and passing it over to me
"your dad has a cognate?" I asked flipping through the book
"my dad had a cognate. Something happened between them and broke their trust. I don't know much about it, my dad doesn't talk about it much"
"oh ok. Would you like to start today or..." I ask flipping to the first exercise
"today. If that is ok with you"
"Sure. You have permission to enter my mind"
After a few seconds, I hear Fitz's voice whisper through my head "I'm in"
"That was faster than last time" I transmit
"what can I say I am that good" Fitz teases
"ok do you want to start... it was your idea"
"hit me. What is the first question?"
"Who is your hero?"
A picture of Alden pops up in Fitz mind "ok my turn. What is your favourite animal?"
My mind immediately thinks of Iggy, yeah, she was a smelly imp, but she was also a friend "this question is for both of us" I transmit
"who is your best friend" a picture of Keefe pops up in Fitz's head. I think of Biana
"uh... Sophie something weird is happening, so there is a picture of Biana and something fuzzy next to it. Like a blurry image. Are you thinking of 2 people?"
"no... what do you mean? I am only thinking of Biana," I say slightly confused
"ok... maybe it's just nothing," Fitz says shrugging
"maybe... ok so that was the last question. Would you like to set another time to do this?"
"sure, how about the library every Wednesday after sundown"
"sounds good. See ya Fitz" I transmit before getting up
"Bye Sophie, see you tomorrow at the Autumn Ball," Fitz says out loud, waving.
Right tomorrow was the Autumn Ball. Fun.
