It was mid summer. Sam walked to Colby's house, which was just down the street. He wanted to spend the night after listening to his parents yell vulgar phrases at one another. He felt he needed to go to the only place he could feel safe and catch a break, Colby's. He walked all the way there and knocked shyly on the door. Colby's mom opened and was shocked to see Sam standing there with teary eyes.

"Sam, honey. are you okay?"

"C-can i spend the night?"

"Of course, Colby is in his room. Feel free to walk up okay? Dinner will be ready soon, are you okay though?"

Sam just nodded as he walked inside and then up the stairs as the small dog named Koki followed him, excited Sam was finally back. Sam knocked on the closed wooden door and he heard some shuffling before it opened.

"Oh, hey. Did we make plans and I forgot again?"

Sam shook his head. He looked down, Colby was quick to grab his hand and pull him into his room. Colby shut the door and hugged Sam as tightly and close to him as possible. Sam let out a heart breaking sob into Colby's shirt clasping it in his tiny fists trying to calm himself.

"What happened Sammy?"

Colby just held him and waited for a muffled response. Whether it took a few minutes or not, he stood patiently combing his fingers through the blonde locks of hair and rubbing his arm. Colby was taller than Sam by a little bit, but not extensively.

"M-m-my parents w-were fi-fighting again..."

"It's okay Sammy, i promise.."

"Wha-what if they l-leave each other?"

"Well, then it's obviously for the best Sammy."

"What if you leave me? I can't lose you.."

Sam held Colby tighter.

"Hey, why are you worried about that? You're my best friend, I would never leave you Sam."

"P-people grow ap-part in highschool. Wha-what if that happens to us?"

Colby pulled away from Sam and looked at him.

"It wont, i promise. I won't ever leave you."

Colby held out his pinkie. Sam wrapped his around it, smiling slightly.

that promise seems to be broken now, doesn't it?
