"Everything what I'm about totell you, will stay in this room. Nothing will go out. It wouldn't just harmme, but the both of you as well."
"Well, that was something." Sam said as we walked to his house. "Vaughn moved us to a different house, so we'll stop by at my place so I can grab the last of my stuff. There will be clothes and everything for you in the new house."
"He doesn't seem to agree and he's withholding information." I replied.
"He'll tell us eventually. Trust me." Sam reassured.Sam's new house was a large house at the end of the street. No houses surrounded it but you could see everything from the house. There was a huge library and plenty of room.
"Isn't this a little bit too much?" I asked Sam as we walked towards the kitchen.
"You think?" A voice called from the pantry. As an instinct, I grabbed a knife and held it up in front of me.
"Wow, calm down little warrior." The voice emerged from the shadows.
Vaughn.
"What do you want, intruder." I snapped at Vaughn.
"Calm down Jen. I asked him to be here." Sam calmly explained as he gently took the knife from my hands. They guided me from the kitchen to the sitting area. They both sat on the other side of the table from me.
"Allow me to explain." Vaugh started off.The next morning Sam and I walked towards the cafeteria. After the explanation, Sam brought me to my new room. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep. This morning I woke up by the smell of fresh bread. After breakfast, Sam told me to be ready in 45 minutes.
"So, in the cafeteria you will be told what you're obligation is. This can differ from cooking to cleaning but there is also a selected few who can be chosen for a more difficult position. During the job you will be sent to the regular world, that's unfortunately all I know." Sam quickly explained. "Most important rule, stay to your job, don't do anything outside the lines." I nodded and quickly followed in his footsteps. We entered the cafeteria and I noticed the people who got captured with me. They all walked with their respective supervisor.
"Follow me." Sam guided me to a table. "Meet some of my friends, this is Jackson. He is a chosen one. This is Robbin, don't let looks fool you. This girl could kick anyone's ass. And last but not least, Mikayla and Davy. Fierce twins who will hunt you down if you hurt any of us. Long story short, we are the most dysfunctional group of friends you could meet but we keep each other out of trouble. You're welcome to join."
"Sit down. We're about to start." Jackson moved over to make room for me. "If you get chosen like me, I'll volunteer to guide you." I said down and smiled at him."New disciples, please step forward." Vaughn addressed everyone. Apparently, the "fog world" eats all meals together on Sundays. I stood up and walked to the front. There was a chair in the middle of the stage. My mind went through all the possibilities, from the sorting hat from Harry Potter to the choices with blood in Divergent.
Lilith and Orson walked towards their brother with some sort of diamond on a pillow.
"Kneel." Orson commanded and I kneeled without wanting to. What kind of mentalism is this? Lilith nudged him between the ribs before handing over the diamond to Vaughn.
"One by one you will be called forward, the eagle marked on your wrist will determine the job you will be appointed. We have multiple categories, if your eagle lights blue, you're on kitchen duty. Green means farming, to give you two examples. We'll start with the librarian." The librarian was categorized in yellow, which meant school. Elio was green and now it was up to me. I stood up and walked over to the chair. Vaughn pressed the diamond to my mark and it colored red. Everyone gasped around me, me being the oblivious person that I am, didn't notice."Can I have my arm back?" I awkwardly asked. Vaughn seemed to snap out of a trance and held me back.
"You are required to report to me and Orson after breakfast. Elio and Joe, you can report to your assigned jobs." Vaughn ordered before lowering his voice to a hushed whisper. "Be careful with your task, you can use it wisely." Seemingly happy with the warning, he gave me a slight nudge to get back to my seat."Well, that was something." Jackson chuckled as I got back.
"Care to elaborate?" I dove into the food to avoid everyone's stares.
"Reds are not common. Only a selected few. Usually, it is not red-red, like garnet or merlot. Yours was red-red, undeniably red." Robbin explained.
"What colors do you have?" I asked.
"I'm a silver, which means that I throw the chains in order of the orange. Robbin and Davy are both pinks, which means there like bouncers or enforcement. We don't really have police here but we have pinks. Jackson is red or orange, no one knows yet. Mikayla is yellow, so she works at the school." Sam explained.
"How many colours are there?"
"We know about 8, we don't know how much more there can be. We told you about most of them, you don't know about purple yet. Purple means that you work in the hospital." Davy told me.
"Good to know." I sighed.Breakfast went by smoothly and I got to know the group a little better.
"Follow me." Orson ordered after I got up. We walked into the back room where Sam, Vaughn and I spoke yesterday. "Sit down."
"Because you ask so kindly." I muttered under my breath. I heard Vaughn chuckle, which he covered up with a cough.
"We have to talk to you about being red. There are only 7 reds in the fog at the moment." Vaughn continued.
"Six." Orson corrected.
"Katy, Ethan, Sharon, Ayden, Jen, Elijah and Jackson. He is part red so he will be counted as one" Vaughn gritted his teeth. I kept saying the names like a mantra in my head. I have to remember them.
"Give us a minute." Orson commanded before throwing me out of the office. "Sit down on the floor and I'll retrieve you when we're done." The door was slammed in my face before I had the chance to reply.I sat down on the floor and closed my eyes, repeating the mantra in my mind.
"Get up, you look like a failed alcoholic." Orson yanked on my arm and I flew into the office.
"Seriously brother, you have the manners of a caveman." Vaughn sighed as he helped me up.
"Whatever. You are a red, congrats." Orson sarcastically snorted.
"Orson, get over yourself. You're just jealous that she is red and you're not." Their sister entered the room. "We haven't been properly introduced, I'm Lilith. Their younger yet more gorgeous sister." She extended her hand and flicked Orson off.
"Lilith, no one asked for your opinion." Orson said.
"If no one asked, then why are you listening?" Lilith commented. "Anyways, a letter came for us. Figured you guys wanted to see."
"Jen, I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the office. The reds have a meeting tonight, we'll tell you everything then. I'll have Jackson pick you up." Vaughn subtly urged me out of the office.
"Sure, fine by me." I muttered before spinning on my heels and walked out.***
