If I hadn't been asleep, slumped over the desk in the lab, snoring as I had fainted not too long ago from exhaustion, I would have heard her footsteps. The clicking of her heels, even if she wanted to be silent, would've given her away anyway.

But I laid there snoring. Unaware of the arm that was headed for me. The grasp around my shoulder. The tension that would build as she slowly let her arm fall over my shoulder and-

"Good morning, chèrie."

I groaned as I woke. This wasn't my bedroom.

"Where am I?", I asked, still slumped over, resting my head on my arms.

"The lab. You started working again after our date?", her purple lips simply smiled at me. Her brown eyes locking on my half closed ones.

"Didn't I tell you I was gonna cure you? That means a second project and-", I yawned as I turned to face her.

"-double the shifts."

"Chèrie. Just focus on the device you were working on. That 'cure' for me can wait."

"No. I made a promise and I'm a man of my word. I just need some coffee and I'll be fine."

"Just a coffee?", she asked.

I looked at her and got up, pulling her close to me.

"I thing I wouldn't mind a good morning kiss either.", I smiled as I looked in her eyes. "Even though I must look as banged up as ever considering I slept on a full steel lab table."

"It doesn't matter.", she said almost without thinking as she got close and kissed me. Once again, that feeling of heaven rushed over me. God, that felt good.

"I dont know how I deserved your love, but I am so glad I have it."

"Because you are special, chèrie.", she responded softly. My heart fluttered. And my stomach growled.

"Okay. I admit. You were right. Let's get breakfast.", I said chuckling.

When we got there, I noticed Sombra getting into a heated discussion with Reaper.

"What's that about?", I asked Amèlie.

"They have their qualms with each other. Leave them be, chèrie.", she said as she pulled me around getting some food.

The food wasnt too bad, but kothing too fancy either. Some toasts, cheeses and meats were provided, but I never saw a chef.

I didn't bother questioning it and just walked to a table, sat next to Amèlie as she and I enjoyed breakfast.

"Would you mind if I ask you something personal, chèrie?"

"Sure, go ahead."

"Did you know you talk in your sleep? This morning I heard you say something. 'I will not let you take over.' What's that about?"

Right. Those damned nightmares. Crap.

"Hm. I dunno. I can't seem to recall what I dreamt of."

This was a lie. The nightmare was always the same. Two black-robed people, egging me on about how I should let them gain control. I only recently understood what they meant. It would mean for me to go on autopilot. But I didn't like that thought one bit.

"Well. You know I'm here right? In case your ightmares get the better of you?"

"Of course! No worries, mon amour."

I could see sombra go invisible as she ran off. Then I felt my pocket get just a tad heavier. The sample.
I quickly finished my plate and excused myself. Amèlie said she went off to training and I quickly kissed her forehead as I walked off.

I walked in and immediately got the vial out. A note was attached to it with what seemed like a QR code.

I didn't pay it any mind and just started working on the sample.

I don't know how long I was at it. Must've been hours, maybe a full day.

Every bit of that sample was truly almost cursed. Doses that would prove either lethal or at least very numbing, but the way it was mixed seems to have shifted some of these goals around. In order to make a cure, I'd have to reverse engineer each of these doses separately and then mix them in the same way. That would take some time.

I turned on my chair and looked at the nuke behind me. I wondered. If I could make such a concoction, I would not only be able to cure Amèlie but maybe modify it so that the earth would be able to sustain more life. Instead of bringing death and decay. It would take a huge amount of work but maybe. Just maybe.

I picked up the paper with the QR code again. I went ahead and scanned it with a cellphoke they'd give me. A small film loaded where Reaper and Amèlie were discussing something. In the end, Reaper gave her what seemed to be a note. The date on the cam seemed to be from my interrogation. Weird.

The movie closed and I received a text from Sombra.

"See this as a friend's act. Cabron, get in her room and find that note A.S.A.P. That's the favour I'm cashing in. I'm sorry."

'I'm sorry?'

I tried texting back but no response. Knowing her, she probably got rid of that number immediately.

What was that about though? A note? What would that note do? Then again, I did promise it to Sombra. And she delivered on her end of the bargain.

Then again. There was still some time left. First, the cure. Tomorrow I would at least have a first sample...if I continued through the night. I'm sure Amélie would scold me but...eh, what's one night?

I started working again. Uncovering each and every piece of the concoction and creating my own. Some of them were easy enough, with all the supplies they had here. Some were a tad trickier but I studied for a reason. At the first lights of dawn, I had a concoction ready. I simply had to run a few simulations to see if there would be any side effects.

But I was optimistic about this one. I put the original poison sample in a new vial and labeled it with a skull. My concoction went into another one.

And I labeled it with a simple heart.
