Funny enough, I had been given some time off and was allowed to leave the base for a bit. Amélie had to train some more but she promised to catch up.
So I went to a coffee bar close by.
"One latte machiatto, please.", I ordered with a smile.
I was handed the cup, paid for with some money I still had left and walked off to a nearby table.
As soon as I sat down the bell of the door rang.
"Hi, luv. One espresso please!", a cheery british voice spoke out.
I look up and see a spiky brown haired slim woman smiling at the barista. A strange familiarity was surrounding her. I just...couldn't put my finger on it.
She turned to me and noticed me staring. She seemed to recognize me.
"Y/N?"
Now it clicked.
"Lena?"
Lena Oxton. She was a friend of mine back in high school. She had been taking a few physics classes alongside me. She seemed to be wearing some leggings and a sporty t-shirt. Perhaps she was out on a run.
"I haven't seen ya in forever, luv! How've ya been? Mind if I take a seat?"
Always a couple of questions at a time with her. She was that kind of person. Lots of energy.
"Sure. Have a seat. I've been good actually. How about you?"
"Ah, I'm alright luv. My girlfriend and I have been rebuildin' and you know what kinds of arguments that brings about."
I chuckled. A conversation with Lena was never boring.
"Speaking of girlfriend. It's good that I see you. Did I see you with a nice chicky yerself the other night?"
I smiled and took a sip from my cup. "As a matter of fact, yes, you may have. Her and I went to a really nice play that night."
"Ooh, now ya gotta tell me. What's she like?"
"Geez Lena. Where do I begin. She's playful. Very passionate. And she has no qualms letting me know she loves me. Straightforward if you will. And gosh. She's so beautiful. Her eyes could paralyze me in a second."
"Wow. She sounds like a stunner. What's her name?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you, Lena."
"Oh come on, try me."
"Fine. Amélie Lacroix."
I went do drink from my latte, expecting a barrage of questions or at least squealing noises but...nothing. I looked back at her. She seemed to be shocked.
"Lena? You okay? What's wrong?"
She put a hand over mine.
"You do not mean the famous ballet dancer from back in the day, do ya, luv?"
"The one and the same. Why do you ask?"
She put her other hand over mine as well.
"Y/N. I'm sorry but I have to tell you this. Wherever you live with her. Get out. She's only using you."
I pulled my hand back. I never expected this. Where the hell was she getting all this from.
"Really Lena? I had hoped you of all people would understand. Finally I love someone that actually loves me back and you come here to tell me it isn't real?"
"Y/N. I know it's hard to believe but you have to trust me. I've hear things about her. She doesn't really love you."
"How would you know? You haven't been there ever after school. No one has. Everyone forgot about me. Anytime I tried to date, it was either pity or as a step up to make someone jealous! And now it wouldn't be real? Do you have any idea how much that thought alone hurts?"
She looked down at her hands as I got up and proceeded to the door.
"It was nice meeting you again, Lena. Next time, let's hope you've got some nicer things to say."
I stomped out of the shop, back to base.
"Wouldn't it be funny, if what she said was true?"
That damned voice again. Normally they came in two's.
"The pain and havoc that would cause, right?"
There the other one was. I ignored them and kept walking.
After a good 10 minute walk I came back into base. I went into my room and grabbed the vials. I was gonna show them. She really did love me. She had to.
I passed by her room. She was still out apparently.
Then I remembered Sombra's question.
"Find that note.", I thought.
I took a quick look in the hallways and walked in, unknowing to what it would cause.
I looked over every nook and cranny. Every piece of furniture. Even in her bed. No piece of paper.
I was about to walk out when I noticed the mirror on the wall, seeing a corner of paper sticking out.
I walked up to it, slowly slipping it out. I uncovered it and started reading it.
With every word, I felt my chest ache even more.
'Ways to keep Y/N L/N on our side.
- Intrigue him. Raise his awareness of you, Widowmaker. Earn his trust.
- Make him fall in love with you. Explain some personal things if required.
- Pretend you love him. Keeping him here will allow us to learn everything about the Temaris project to turn it to our plans.
- Fake any and all emotions. After all you and I both know you can not feel anything.
Reaper'
For what seemed to be an eternity, the world stood still amongst me. I could hear them again. Loud and clear.
"Well, well. Turns out Lena was right, eh?"
The cloaked man now stood in the room with me. Looking straight at me, arms crossed.
"Awww. Does it hurt? You poor little thing."
Another cloacked man appeared on my other side, hands on his hips.
"It's...it's not real. It can't be. She loves me. She...she showed me."
"Or it was faked.", the voice on the right said.
"Just like the note says, Y/N. She can't feel anything.", the voice on the left said.
I just slipped the paper back into the mirror. I went back to my room, no longer listening to the voices. Everyone was right. It was all fake.
How could I've been so blind? They merely used me for the project. She merely played a role. She didn't love me.
Every realisation sent more tears over my cheeks and even more pain into my chest.
"You've got something, chèrie. Some je ne sais quoi."
"Je t'aime, chèrie."
Every word. Every action. Every kiss. It had been a lie. Straight to my face. I walked up to my bedroom door. I packed my things and just started running for the exit. I didn't run into anyone. I had enough. Of so many things.
I remember how we both had walked near the lake in the full moon. How she looked at me during the play. How our first date went. How she sat in the lab as I was finishing work.
Every memory hurt more than the last.
I passed her room once more. Maybe. Just maybe.
I quickly scribbled a note and left the vial with the heart on top of it on her bedside furniture. This would prove whatever was true.
I turned and ran away.
