Merlyn's POV

It was my name-day today and I was turning 14, mother had already made me my favourite breakfast and had given me a new homespun dress since I had grown out of the last one. Unlike most of the other girls in the village, I hit puberty early and was much taller and more mature than most fourteen-year-olds which made me look older than I really was. Arthur who was 16 was only a head taller than me but we looked nearly the same age. He smiled and wished me a happy name day for which I thanked him and gave him a peck on the cheek. Mother smiled tightly at the small display of affection and began cleaning away the bowels from breakfast. I'd barely risen from my seat when Will barged in crowing a happy name-day and lifting me up in a bear hug.

"Are you ready for our annual name day celebrations?" Will asked excitedly, I grinned and nodded. Arthur sketched a brow and asked where we were going. Before I could answer Will quickly told Arthur that it was a private affair and that it was none of his business. Arthur started at Will for a moment before looking at me,

"I guess I'm not invited by the sounds of things." Arthur said.

"It's not that you're not invited..." I said elbowing Will before he could make comment. " It's just the place we're going is hard to get to and you've only just started walking short distances on your leg and it would be too dangerous for you at the moment." Arthur looked hurt but nodded and smiled anyway. Now I felt bad so I promised to bring him some blackberries from the place we were going and I gave him another quick kiss before dragging Will out of the house and deep into the woods.

It took nearly an hour to get to our secret place deep in the woods climbing over rocks and through thick brambles. Our place was a small cave entrance that opened up into an underground terrarium with plants that were in constant bloom despite the season and shafts of buttery sunlight streaming from cracks and holes in the ceiling. A small waterfall bubbled merrily and some small creatures darted through the underbrush as we approached our spot under the great oak tree.

Once we settled and took a moment to enjoy the beauty of our little corner of the world he excitedly asked me to perform some magic. I began by creating dozens of multi coloured butterflies allowing them to flutter about their new home and then moved on to feeding some of my magic into the earth making the plants and trees around me grow and take on a mystical glow. Despite how many times Will has seen my magic he's still as excited as a little kid when I do these simple tricks and spells. We spent most of the day chasing each other around the cave allowing my magic to dance freely through the air and eating the fruits from the trees and bushes that should have been long out of season but were kept in bloom by the magic I had infused into the cave. It was later in the afternoon and the sunlight had turned from gold to a deeper orange, we were lying under the great oak watching the birds and insects fluttering about through the shafts of fading light when Will spoke up,

" So, it seems as though you've taken a shine to the knight of Camelot aye?" I blushed and mumbled a non-comical response. " I mean he's not so bad to look at, a far sight better than many of the other knuckleheads in the village. But if he finds out about you little bird I fear of what might happen." Will turned toward me with a look of sincere worry. I sighed,
