Hyun Bin had always taken pride in the fact just how uncomplicated he was— if he had something on his mind, he'd talk it out. If he was uncomfortable in a situation, he always made sure to stand up and leave without embarrassing anyone else. If he loved someone, he showed them rather than just tell pleasant words of affection.
You see, he had always been more of a man of action rather than words.
But some times, he hated that about himself— just like now.
On several occasions, he wished he was more of the charming sweet talker women adored rather than someone who focused on getting the job done by hand. He desired to be one of those oh so perfect boyfriends the kdrama world had told us about, not knowing that he himself, was in a league of his own, unmatched. While he had failed to see this, his almost a year long girlfriend, Son Yejin, hadn't for she knew the softness he possessed. The incredible charm and aura that was almost impossible to find in a man of today's time.
But there was Hyun Bin, ever the picture perfect boyfriend without even realizing it.
“Garlic, garlic, garlic,” he hummed to himself as he looked around frantically in the cabinets. With his eyes trained on the sizzling pan before him, there was little to nothing that occupied his mind except getting the food on the table before Yejin arrived. Her shift at the library would soon end, she'd be back home in about half an hour. He had to make sure everything was in its prim-proper condition before that.
Otherwise, my big night will be completely ruined, he told himself.
Today was big day, an extremely big night, if you may. If all things went according to plan, they would be able to enter the next step in their relationship. For quite some time now, he had known that she was the one. It was no surprise that he had started thinking of marriage as early as six months into their dating cycle, it was hard not to when she complimented him so well— witnessing his ups and downs, becoming the anchor in his life, telling him that all will be okay on his darkest nights and smiling in joy on his brightest days; a woman like that was godsend, it would be foolish not to marry her, he had told himself in those six months.
Still, he had waited for more than a few year and half to actually be able to pop the question.
Having been his uncomplicated self, he had asked for his friend for the best way to propose to his girlfriend. Naturally, it had taken him down this route— cooking her dinner in the privacy of her apartment, (they had long shared keys with each other) in the midst of candlelight, wine and soft vinyl music. Like any man, he'd wait for her to finish the food and then, get down on one knee. If all went well, he'd get to call her by his name at the end of the evening.
Just thinking about it made him smile like a goof.
The battered fish almost burned in the pan, thanks to his daydreaming but nothing Hyun Bin couldn't save already.
“Okay so, I almost burned the fish but it's okay now.” he put the pan in the oven, a timer of twenty minutes to get that crisp, golden texture. “Potatoes are mashed and seasoned, I've made the salad—” he mentally checks items off his list, “Ah, what else?” to a stranger, he might seem crazy for talking to himself like that but to Bin, it was the most natural thing in the world. Then, as if an imaginary light bulb lit up over his head, “Ice cream sundae, she likes that.” having gone overboard with everything, Bin decided to churn the ice cream himself.
She may just say yes because I made it myself, you never know.
Smiling to himself, he reaches for the frozen strawberries tucked away in the corner of the freezer. He recalls going grocery shopping with her just last week— they had bought three packets of these and now, only one remained.
