After a couple of stores we finally stopped at my mother’s favorite and we walked in to the upscale store for people with deep pockets. My mother was unstoppable when she had my fathers card at her full advantage.

I smiled politely as we walked into an open space that screamed money.

“Excuse me, Ma’am?” My mom turned her blonde head to the side and looked at the sales clerk that gave my mother a slight frown. “But you need to have an appointment to come in here. I’m going to have to ask you-“

“Mrs. Demotts! How glade we are to see you.” The manager cut the girl of smoothly as she walked out behind the confused clerk, I didn’t show anything as I watched this unfold. “What can I do for you today?” She asked as she smiled politely and I knew she was trying to cover for her new employ. I saw her hands twitch and I knew she was trying not to fidget; anyone would squirm under my mother’s cold look that could freeze oceans.

“Actually yes, you may.” My mother stepped to the side to showcase Dania and myself. The manager was happy to help us and was quick to please my mother who sat on the plush designer couch as I browsed the racks and picked out elegant gowns that I liked and knew my mother liked.

As I went and changed in the dressing room I felt a sharp stab of pain in my stomach but I ignored it and swiftly pulled on the soft pink dress that had a sweetheart neck line and flared out at the waist, softly I fingered the lace and silk as I smiled. This wasn’t so bad, I guessed.

I walked out and paused at the platform before taking a careful step up and looked at my mother reaction in the mirror. Seeing her eyes light up, I guessed that she approved and listened to her comment and nod in approval before I finally stepped down and went to try the other dresses on but none just seemed good enough. They were all either to slutty or too frilly for my taste but as I walked back to the changing room I saw something that caught my eye and made my way over to it.

“That’s a one of a kind.” The manager smiled softly as she saw me fingering the material. I glanced at the size and didn’t turn as I answered.

“It’s perfect.” I murmured mesmerized, this really wasn’t going to be bad at all.

After I finally found the dress and had walked out to my shock and surprise I saw my mother and Dania getting along, but I really should have saw this coming. Dania loved anything to do with fashion and gossip; she would have been my mother’s perfect daughter. Silently I grabbed my purse and left the boutique knowing that I wouldn’t be missed when they began to talk about to designers and what Dania was going to get. They could be there for hours and not notice I was gone and by then I would probably or possibly be back.

Quietly, I cursed my heels as I made it to the heart of the city and walked past couples before I finally found the bookstore and Starbucks with aching feet. Grumbling about stupid traitorous friends and glaring at my heels, I was too busy to notice that someone was standing right in front of myself and knocked into them.

My head whipped up quickly and I saw and expensive, black button up shirt and I cursed profusely as I felt scalding liquid burn my arm. I shook my arm as I looked up with a scowl on my face; making my green eyes narrow threateningly.

“What the hell?” I heard a growl and I saw the man swipe at the front of his shirt.

“Of course.” I groaned as I saw the coffee stain on my glove and felt the wetness and I quickly took it off and showed my purple knuckles that now stung. “Nice going, Jackass.” I snarled as I pulled at my ruined cardigan.
