I’m trying to concentrate. Why can’t these girls just shut up? I already have enough on my mind with the arrangements of a supposed marriage being next month; the last thing I need is more to bother me. I stare agonizingly at the sheet if paper in front of me, before realising that I’m getting nowhere. I sigh as I lay down my pencil in defeat. I curse in my mind as I listen to the group of girls behind me laughing and talking about him. By 'group of girls' I mean Rebecca, Lucy and their friends, and by 'him' I mean Daniel.
Obviously any hope of getting some studying done was diminished instantly when I heard his name. I know eavesdropping is bad, but these girls are so loud the penguins in Antarctica can even hear them.
"I can't believe it! He actually let me borrow his notes!" Rebecca squeals.
"He MUST have a thing for you," one girl proclaims.
"He even smiled - with his adorable dimples! He was totally trying to get your attention!" another adds.
I cannot take it anymore and I bang my face on the table at their stupidity.
"Do you think I really have a chance?" Rebecca asks dreamily, not noticing me killing myself in the corner.
"Of course!" Lucy says, which is followed by several squeals of encouragement.
All of a sudden Daniel walks by, and the group of girls stop talking immediately. I breathe a sigh of relief as all of their squealing and giggling has come to an end. All is silent but the sound of Daniel's footsteps on the tiled ground. It feels like we're all on stage; and the spotlights shining directly on him.
He stops next his friend Connor, and begins a conversation.
Once he is out of hearing range the girls all gasp in awe, as if they were holding their breath all along.
"Come on Becca, now’s your chance!"
"Are you sure about this?" Rebecca asks worriedly.
"Come on already. He’s right there."
Rebecca is pushed forward by her group of friends so that she now stands on her own. The only thing between her and Daniel is me and the bench I’m sitting on. She breathes deeply, and takes a step forward.
"Hi Daniel," she approaches him. "Just wanted to thank you for letting me use your notes. You can have them back now," she hands over a bunch of papers.
"No problem," he says, while looking down politely. Rebecca just stands there for a moment ogling him.
"You’re so incredibly smart…you should tutor me sometime maybe.”
Daniel laughs awkwardly, “Not really. Connor is smarter. He can teach you.”
"No!” she suddenly spills.
