For Jihwan and I, time passed almost as if we never had time apart. Things got back into our usual rhythm. With some minor changes of spending more time apart. And in the month that passed, I almost forgot about wanting to have sex with my handsome boyfriend. Almost.
And for the first time in our relationship, Jihwan had plans that didn't involve me. It was a Friday night, and Captain Watts asked me to work late. I only agreed because Jihwan was busy. I couldn't help but wonder what Jihwan was up to as I returned to the station after taking care of Murphy.
It made even less sense since Lance's rehearsal dinner for his wedding was tomorrow and the actual wedding the following day. Jihwan was my plus one to both the wedding and the rehearsal.
I walked into the station and Captain Watts met me at the door. He stopped me before I could take a step further.
"You're working the front desk," he said. "I don't expect a lot to happen tonight, but it is Friday, so who knows."
And just like that, he walked away. I smiled and made my way to the front desk. I've been able to take some more hours lately. And in those hours, I've been working the front desk. It wasn't too bad, I usually just worked on my cases until someone came up to me. The lady who worked there with me always fell asleep around one in the morning, but she was nice to me when she was awake.
Everything was going well until Captain Watts came up to me just after midnight.
"Barnes, I need you to go to this address," Captain Watts said. He held out an paper with an address on it for me.
"Why, what's going on?" I asked.
"There was a domestic disturbance. A bachelor party. Two of the guests got into a fight, loud enough that the neighbors called it in. It escalated so that almost everyone at the party there got involved."
"What does this have to do with me?" I asked.
"Because when we separated the two parties who started it, they both said they wanted to speak to you."
I looked down at the address he handed me. It was my Dad's home. Oh no, a bachelor party. Lance's bachelor party, more than likely. Why did a fight break out at the bachelor party.
"I'm on my way," I said.
"I'm coming with you," Captain Watts said. He followed me out to my car and got in the passenger side.
The two of us were silent on the ride to my childhood home. I didn't know what to expect when we got there. I expected gay men to be there to celebrate my brother, with EG and Dad. But what I didn't expect was the entire party to be separated down the middle of the front yard. And talking to police officers. Neighbors were outside of their houses, looking at the commotion and police cars.
Amiss the crowd I could see the large stomach of my father. He was standing with an officer and talking animatedly with his hands. I got out of the car and rushed up to my Dad. I hoped Captain Watts was right behind me, because all that mattered was my father.
"Annie!" my dad called out before turning to the officer with him. "See my daughter is a detective."
I stood in front of him and waved the officer off. Who looked down at me with a disdainful look.
"What's going on, Dad? There was a fight?"
"EG confronted Jihwan about something that none of us understood," Dad said. "He just went on and on about stuff that made no sense. Jihwan tried calming him down. But EG said something about Jihwan only being with you for your body and your job. That's when Jihwan snapped and began yelling more things that no one understood."
