"hey," i instantly perked up as dream picked up his phone. "what are you doing right now?" i put the phone on speaker and set my phone down on the small end table near me. i picked out my older sneakers, untying them and sitting down.

"um," his voice sounded drowsy, like he had just woken up. "nothing."

"did- did you just wake up?" i scoff out a laugh, despite trying to suppress it. i could hear the ruffling of his bedsheets through the phone. regardless i pull my shoes on, starting to tie them.

"totally not. what time is it?" he yawned at the end of his sentence.

"eleven." i respond.

"in the morning?"

"no. it's night." i dont even try to keep down my laugh. he groans in protest at me. once i calm down i stand up, grab my phone and the wallet that held my id.

"shut up. what's up anyways? why'd you call?" he says, trying to push past the fact that he was asleep at eleven. i open up my garage door, hitting the garage opener carelessly.

"i was going to ask if you wanted to go for a drive?" i ask, slowly opening up my car door so i dont drop anything in my hands.

"do i have a choice?" i sigh.

"not really." i laugh, starting up the car. he lets out a small laugh.

"i'll go get ready. i'll see you in ten?" you could hear his voice start to warm up, after not being used for hours.

"in ten." i confirm, hanging up and backing up my car, and starting the drive to his house. like said, it took ten minutes before i was in his driveway. i didn't even get a chance to pick up my phone to text him before he was out his front door. although, i'm sure my headlights hitting his windows didn't help my case. i smiled, unlocking the door. he smiled back, approaching the car. he opened the door and slid into the passenger seat, offering a small "hello."

wordlessly, i hand him the aux. he laughs. yet, he still puts on a playlist he had made a while back for nights like these.

it wasn't uncommon that i'd impulsively decide to pick him up and go for a drive at night.

soon enough, it became apart of our lives. it was something we each looked forward to.

it was nice.

regardless, i set out on the drive. we never headed anywhere specific. sometimes we'd roll a dice to see how many intersections we'd pass before we would turn. sometimes i'd mindlessly do whatever. sometimes we'd get lost in conversation and head straight down the highway for two hours.

this time i decided to mindlessly turn whenever it felt right.

it wasn't long before we were on a highway and lost in a conversation about patches, his cat. luckily, though, the highway was relatively empty. which, now that i think about it is surprising.

"no, there's no doubt in my mind i love her more than you do!" i exclaim, clearly passionate about my love for his cat.

"(y/n)," he deadpans. "no way. i adopted her!" i shake my head.

"and? you can adopt anything! that statement doesn't do anything to help your case." i say seriously, turning down the music a little. clay scoffed next to me.

then, at the same time, we both bursted out in laughter. it was this- the loopy-ness, careless laughter, and enjoying each other's company -that i loved the most. especially after a hard week, with work pilling up. conversations like that one lasted at least an hour, and now we were completely and totally lost. yet, neither of us seemed to mind.

the clock on the console of the car shined 01:13

however, we were stopped at a small lake side. the water was calm, a gas station across the street making the water sparkle a bit. we got out of the car and sat on the hood, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. subconsciously, a smile crept onto my face. soon after, clay lifted his arm up and over my shoulder, pulling me a bit closer.

"i love this." he whispered.

"this?" i questioned. what was he talking about?

"driving out at ungodly hours. ending up in god-knows-where. lakeside, holding each other. meaningless, yet incredibly meaningful, conversations on our way. you being by my side." the florida man slowly trailed off. he looked over at me, and i blushed at being caught staring at him.

"then, in that case, i love this, too."

"good," he paused. almost as if he was debating what he should say next. an almost visible loading gif was stamped to his forehead. "we should go out sometime." his sentence was rushed. i look around.

"we are..." i say sarcastically.

"no, i mean," he sighs. "like a date." my smile got wider.

"give me a date and time."

"next thursday at seven?" he asks, keeping his stare at me. being stubborn, i kept his gaze. almost like a staring contest, yet we were both blinking.

"in the morning?" i teased, mocking his voice. he rolled his eyes.

"no. at night." he comes back, mocking my voice. i let out a lung-emptying laugh.

"why," i finally look up. "why i'd love to." he smiles, laying back on the windshield. i follow suit, cuddling a bit closer than usual to him. clay didn't complain.
