POV Waverly
I lay in my bed staring up at the stick-on stars I put there when I was 6 years old. I wish I could just go back to being as carefree as I was back then. Somehow, I remember the day that I put them there like it was yesterday even though it was 10 years ago.
-Flashback-
"Waves come here; I want to show you what my mom got me!"
I quickly turned my head to look next-door just in time to see my best friend Nicole jumping up and down before running inside her house.
Nicole has been my best friend since when we were babies, and we play together all the time. Our moms let us spend time together whenever we want, and we always have so much fun.
I make my way up to Nicole's bedroom, where her mom said she was, to see her jumping on her bed trying to reach the ceiling.
"Nicole, what are you doing?" I say laughing.
She grunts and jumps as she tells me "I am trying to stick these to the ceiling."
I ask her, "What even are they and why are you sticking them to your ceiling, silly?"
She explains that they are big and tiny stars that you stick to your ceiling and then they glow in the dark at night.
"That's so cool! Do you have any extras?"
She smiles at me as she says, "of course I have extras, when I got them with my mom, I thought of you right away."
I squeal and jump up and down excitedly. "Let's go over to my house now!"
We make our way over to my house right next-door and take turns jumping on my bed and sticking the stars to my ceiling. At some point we both collapse on the bed from laughing so hard and as the laughter dies down, we just stared up at the work we just completed.
I tell Nicole, "I can't wait to do stuff like this with each other for the rest of our lives. I am so glad we are best friends forever!"
She looks over at me and says, "Me too, best friends forever no matter what. Pinky promise."
We link our pinky fingers and get up to go play outside.
-End Flashback-
I sigh deeply. Shortly after that day Nicole's parents told her that they were moving because her Dad got a better job in a different state. I remember when Nicole told me we both cried for a while, but still promised to stay best friends and talk all the time.
As the months went by after she moved away, I could sense that she was becoming more distant and seemingly losing interest in me day by day. I would be lying to myself if I said it didn't hurt, but she didn't seem to have interest in my life anymore as she made new friends and started a new life, so what could I do. Eventually we lost contact all together and just went our separate ways.
I am now 16, in high school and have a brand-new group of friends that I love dearly, but it's little things like the stars on my ceiling that remind me of our lost friendship and I can't help but wonder what she's up to these days.
I shake out of it as my phone buzzes on my bedside table. I reach over and see that my best friend Claudia texted me about our school project due tomorrow night. She asked me to send over my work and that she would finish it up and hand it in. I thank her and tell her that I am going to bed early and that I would see her at school in the morning.
As I look back up to the stars I begin to doze off.
