➵ | thirty- seven, the yule ball

"ARE YOU READY?"

thana turned around and smiled at the two girls. they somehow managed to get a way into the slytherin common room and both had a big smile on their faces. thana looked at herself in the mirror one last time. she had been shopping with the girls instead of just wearing the dress her father had given to her. the green dress had been replaced by a black one, it had sparkles and fitted perfectly. her brown, almost black hair was loosely curled and she had even done her make up, black eyeshadow with tons of glitter.

they had barely entered the room filled with people, all three were still looking for their dates, when professor mcgonagall spotted them. "thana dear, go find your date and get ready, the three- five," she chuckled when the professor corrected herself, "have to open the ball with a dance." thana couldnt ask more questions because the professor had already ran off to find harry. trevor, haileys date, was the first one to show up. he even bowed a little and kissed her hand. thana was nervous, she didn't even know why. the day fred had asked her and the days after that she had spend more time with him than ever before and she seemed to completely forget about draco and blaise.

just as she was losing hope the red head stood behind her and leaned in a bit to whisper in her ear, "hello love." she turned around and sighed in relief. he took her hand and kissed it and thana felt her cheeks burn and her stomach went wild. they walked to the other champions and she greeted harry and cedric with a hug and politely introduced herself to cho and padma or parvati, she honestly had no idea. "no date viktor?" she asked but spoke too soon. both harry and his date were staring at viktors date but thana still hadn't noticed her. fred chuckled a little and lifted her up in the air and turned her around, leaving his arms around her waist after putting her back on the ground. "oh my god." she gasped and ran up to hermione. "you look beautiful. uhm fred i found a new date sorry." she joked.

when the doors opened she held freds arm tightly, not only did her date give her butterflies with everything he said and did but there were also a lot of people staring at her. she quickly spotted paige, who was holding draco's hand, hailey, who was laughing at something trevor said and theo who was fixing some random slytherin's dress. as they entered the room fred high fived george. thana didn't even notice draco's eyes on her as she walked past him and paige. "ready dear?" thana nodded and let fred take her hand and waist, following his steps as they danced through the room. he lifted her up, spinned her around and let her fall into his arms. he then pulled a rose out of his pocket and handed it to her. thana didn't suspect a thing and looked at it with the biggest smile. but fred being fred he had given her a prank rose and the brunette was covered in water. she bursted out in laughter and stopped dancing to grasp her stomach. the entire thing was extremely funny to her. mcgonagall, who had been dancing with dumbledore until the champion got herself covered in water, came running to them, fred had taken back the rose and got himself covered in the water as well and just when she thought she was done laughing ron randomly walked by in his beautiful dress robes. after accidentally pointing the rose at snape they finally arrived at the food.

thana smiled at fred, "you're amazing." she said as they sat down, taking a break from the food and dancing. "i know." he flipped his hair, making thana laugh again. "can i have this dance? i promise i'll stick to the rules this time." he winked and took her hand as she sat up. they followed everyone else, he lifted her up when he was supposed to and only stepped on her toes once. they didn't take their eyes off of each other. both their lips were curled up into big smiles and just as they leaned in, both thinking the same thing, the music changed and george jumped on his brothers back. "don't mind me,, i'm not even here!" he yelled as the two jumped around. thana nodded and waved them goodbye as she started looking for her friends. theo and his date had already joined draco and paige so thana just swung her arms around theo and paige, "you all look amazing!" she yelled, trying to shout over the music. "uhm yeah you too." draco awkwardly answered, his eyes not leaving the floor. she had a quick chat with them and took haileys hand once she saw her, "sorry trevor, stole your date." sadly her mrs steal your girl moment got interrupted by fred, who turned her around, "sorry hailey, stole your date." they kept dancing and fred did everything he could to make thana laugh. they jumped around, tried to do the wave but no one wanted to join, made up some weird dance moves themselves and at the end of the night, after most students left, they were back to slow dancing.

no jokes, no prank roses, no slytherin friends. just them and some other students. they heard ron and hermione argue and thana chuckled. fred stopped looking at their feet and looked in her eyes, without noticing the two stepped closer to each other, "i had a lot of fun tonight. and i was really worried that you'd think i asked you just to have someone but the past week i've just, i dont know, just been thinking so much about you." as he said the last words thana leaned in a bit more, "i had fun too and-" she didn't get to continue her sentence because fred pressed his lips against hers. he moved his hand, the one he was holding hers with, and put it on her cheek. she wrapped both of her arms around his neck and smiled into the kiss.

it was george who made them pull away, he stood there and made kissing sounds. fred got red and awkwardly pushed georges shoulder. "sorry that i interrupted that but uhm hermione is crying and i don't know what to do." thana nodded and smiled at fred. "i'll see you tomorrow okay?" fred nodded and thana kissed his cheek before waving george goodbye and quickly walking over to where hermione was crying. even though the two had had their ups and downs they were friends. and hermione looked like she could really use a friend. she quietly sat down next to her and wrapped her arm around her shoulder. she didn't have to say anything, they just sat there. after a while hermione calmed down and looked up at thana, "if you want to talk about it im here but i would understand if you'd just wanted to go to bed now. just know that i'm here okay?" hermione nodded and hugged her before standing up. "thank you." her voice was softer than usual and they both went separate ways after saying goodbye.

thana didn't expect to see draco sitting on the couch in the common room. he was still in his dress robes, picked out by his father she assumed, and his eyes were focused on the water. that was until thana accidentally closed the door a bit too loud. "sorry." she mumbled and just walked over to the girls dorms. she stopped when draco didn't even make a sound. she expected a snarky comment but he remained silent. as much as she just wanted to go to bed she sighed and let herself fall down on the couch next to him.

"what?" as much as he tried to sound mean thana could hear how tired and sad he was. "i was about to ask you the same thing." he shrugged and stared at his feet. "whats going on? we barely talk and when we do it feels like you don't even want to talk to me." draco scoffed and stood up, still not looking at thana. "why are you even here? go fuck that stupid weasley boyfriend of yours."

thana stood up too and felt the anger take over. "why do you even care?  draco you're my best friend. always have been and always will be. can't you just be happy for me? he's sweet and funny and understanding and he genuinely cares about me, maybe you should take notes. and not that its any of your business but he's not my boyfriend." draco was looking at her now but thana just shook her head and left the room. she meant everything she said. sure, there had been moments that thana felt like she could have feelings for him but looking back at those moments she laughed. he was her best friend and seeing him with someone else didn't even hurt her. because she liked fred, a lot.
