It was the crack of dawn, the day of glory. Summer meant freedom for the groupie. Five girls and four boys who's summer would change forever. For them, summer meant skinny dipping in the pool, midnight bonfires and keeping friends close. But it was so much more than that. Looking back at it, the laughter, the memories, the pain and the happiness is what made them who they are now.
Maddie Foster, a diamond in the rough. For a girl who was 5'2 and loved to keep her hair in a messy bun in her down time, her smile could cure anything. When it came to decisions that her heart had to decide, she was hopeless. Slowly breaking down day by day, Maddie realised that sometimes catching feelings can ruin so many friendships. One day she could have the whole world in her hands and the next, she'd have nothing because of a pair of pretty eyes and a deathly personality.
Liam and Maddie. Maddie and Liam, it fitted perfectly, the way it rolled on the top of your tongue. But they were near perfect, or so they found out. It was a simple story. Senior year, Liam Fitzgerald was and will always be popular. Sure, he was the face of the whole student body but he was never arrogant or seemed to have an ego.In fact, that's what he hated most about popularity. Why do people have to pay the ultimate price of loyalty and kindness in order to throw your name out into the area? He never seemed to wrap his head around it. That's what caught Maddie's eye when she first set eyes on him. He was an open book, and he wasn't like the others, he was special.
And that's where it's started; in AP English. Head over heels for each other, they were never really sure what they wanted. A lifelong partner or a part time crush? Now it's the summer of graduation, and that answer is still circling around Liam's mind from time to time.
Arriving at Liam's house, Maddie could not contain her excitement. It was 8pm sharp, she always had impeccable timing and waited by the front yard on the isolated road. Leaning on the door of the 10 seater caravan, Chase and Tyler stuffed the boot with as many bags as possible. They weren't exactly light packers.
"How long does it take to pack a few things and come out?" Tyler moaned. "And then you have Jessica, Lea and Chloe. They can never come on time."
"Give Lea a break." Maddie laughed. "She loves going to the softer ends of California, you know how she is about road trips though."
"Speaking of the devil..." Tyler said, rubbing the left side of his temple and then receiving a light slap on the arm by Maddie for his funny yet harsh side comment.
"Finally." Maddie said hugging the other three girls.
"What, did you think we were going to leave you alone with the guys?" Chloe laughed.
"I would never let that happen." Jessica laughed holding onto Maddie. She had such a special bond will the three girls.
"Let's get this summer started then!" Lea stated, throwing her hands in the air.
"Let me check on Liam." Maddie said with a smile on her face.
"Oh, tell him to hurry up and see if Nick is with him."
Nick Stone, the sophisticated one out of us. If there was anything that Maddie knew about love, it was that she could see it in Nick's eyes for Jessica and she couldn't be any happier for the two. They were more than perfect, whenever he's around her, it as if she's the only one in the room. Finding a love like that was almost impossible when it came to Liam and her.
Maddie suspected that Liam's parents were already long gone to New York, they were never really around. Walking in, there were a few luggage bags. It wasn't too much; Tyler and Chase could probably handle it.
"Maddie." She turned around to see Nick.
"Have you seen L-"
"Liam? He's up in his room. Be out of the house quick. We're about to go." He smiled.
"Okay. Jessica is probably looking for you." She informed him.
"Thanks for telling me." He relaxed a little on hearing her name and left.
"Liam." Maddie spoke up, leaning on the edge of his bedroom door.
"You made it." Sighing in relief.
"Yeah well, I don't want to rush you but everyone's waiting." She said leaning on him.
"I'm just about to head out."
"We've still got a little bit of time." She said smiling.
Liam dropped his duffel bag on the ground to puller her into his arms. And so there they stood slowly swaying in each other's arms, hoping to stay there for as long as they can. They loved each other but where hurting. She closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest, he was much taller than her. She didn't want it to end, to start fighting again like usual.
Little did they know what the quiet ends of California had in stall for them...
