Mia's P.O.V
After the incident with Lucas, I changed clothes in the girls' locker room, grateful for my backup outfit. English class passed quickly, and I met Jesse and Hailey at our lockers before heading to the cafeteria.
We ordered food – fries for me, burgers and fries for them – and sat at our usual table, discussing TV shows and food. Lucas appeared, greeting me with a "hey" and asking to join us. We chatted, exchanging glances.
"Can I borrow your phone?" Lucas asked.
"Why?"
"To save my number."
I handed it over, and he entered his number. We exchanged numbers, and lunch passed quickly.
After saying goodbye to Jesse and Hailey, I met Lucas in the parking lot.
"So, you can drive ahead, and I'll tail behind," I said.
"Okay."
At the Restaurant
We parked and entered the fancy restaurant. "This isn't a date," I clarified.
"I know," Lucas replied. "I just wanted my apology to feel genuine."
Vincent, the maître d', led us to a window table. I texted Mom, saying I'd be home by 9.
"So..." Lucas trailed off.
"Why did you talk to Vincent like that?" I asked.
"My dad owns this place," he replied.
We played 20 Questions. Lucas's full name is Lucas Santiago Graham. His favorite color is black, and he's 17.
After ordering shrimp alfredo and T-bone steak, we continued our conversation.
As we finished eating, I checked my phone: 8:56.
"Thanks for the non-date. See you around school."
"You're welcome. Hope this happens again."
"I'm not sure."
While driving home, I reflected on the evening. Lucas is rich, likes hamburgers and fries with Coke, and has dated eight people.
As I pulled into my gate, I realized I was thinking about Lucas.
Inside, Mom and Dad were cuddling on the sofa.
"Hey sweetie," Mom said. Dad nodded.
"Good evening. I'm exhausted. Going to bed."
In my room, my phone vibrated – a message from "Hottest Guy on Earth."
Convo:
HGOE: Hi
Mia: Who's this?
HGOE: Lucas
Mia: Oh, hey
HGOE: Did you reach home okay?
Mia: Yeah
I renamed him "Lucas" in my contacts.
Mia: I'm going to bed now.
Lucas: Goodnight
Mia: Bye
I changed into PJs, thinking about that blue-eyed boy with black hair.
