The Warning

EVELYN'S POV

“What was that?” Max asked. “Sounds like something broke in the kitchen.” Jude said in a duh tone. “I will go check it.” Harry got up.

Alex pulled me close to her side and whispered “Does this has something to do with your nightmares?” Does this? I don’t know. I just shrugged.

While Harry was half way through the kitchen, the whole house became pitch dark. “What the…” Harry’s voice echoed through the hallway.

“Is it just me or is it really weird?”Kate asked. “I will go with the latter one coz it’s only this house without any electricity.” Max said while looking through the window.

We heard the sound from the kitchen once again. All of us got up and decided to check the kitchen TOGETHER. Yes, all 8 of us. There could be a psycho wanting to kill us all in the house. No one is stupid enough to stay back in this freaky dark living room. We used our phones for light. As we all went to the kitchen, I could sense someone’s presence behind me. And it is not the other seven because all of them are in front of me. I held Luke’s hand really tight. “Anything wrong, Eve?”  I heard his worried voice. “No, just a bit scared”. He pulled me closer. But I swear someone is behind me. I am too scared to look back.

On entering the kitchen, we all checked for any broken pieces or anything displaced from its place, but we found none. We checked all the cupboards, counters but still none. Alex and I were checking the store room, still nothing. All of us were confused as what is happening.

We heard a knock on the front door. All of us gasped. “What the hell is happening?” Jude asked, there was a tint of fear in his voice. “You all girls stay here, we will go check it out” Harry informed us. “ It’s better we stick together guys.” Sofi was right.

I knew why this was happening. Walking out of the store room I pulled Alex away from the gang.

“Hey, I think the ghost is the cause for the power cut.” I whispered so that no one can hear us.

“Why do you think so?”

“Last time when I decided to tell Luke about my nightmares, that’s when the ghost first called me. And now when I was to confess about the nightmare, the electricity is gone. Put two and two together.”

“Guys, stick together.” We could hear Harry’s voice in the hallway.

“Wait, if the ghost has done all of this, then who is at the door?” My eyes widened at Alex’s question.

“Holy cheese balls, we got to warn them.”

When we were about to move out of the kitchen, the door closed making a loud noise. I froze. Alex held my wrist so tight that I am sure any fortune teller will be able to tell her future, looking at my wrist. We could hear faint voices of the guys. When I reached out for the door, “Don’t”, I heard the same raspy husky voice.

“Next time when you try to say, someone you love will die. But I assure you one day, you don’t have to live a life in a lie.”

With that he was gone in a poof. “You can’t say about your nightmare to anyone? What is he going to get from that? What is his problem?” Alex kept on asking the questions with fear. The door swung open and the guys were standing. Alex looked so relieved.

 “What the hell happened?” Luke asked.

“Nothing, Alex closed the door in frustration and I guess this door was tight?” I just said whatever came to mind. I have no idea even if it made sense.

“Oh, yeah... We have never closed this door since day 1. So maybe it could happen.” Harry Ryder just saved me.. At the same time the electricity was back on.

“I guess we found what broke. Look behind the door.” Sofi pointed behind the door.

A glass vase along with a plate was in pieces. “How did it fall from a closed cabin?” Nerdy Jude asked.

“Did you check who was at the door?” Alex asked changing the subject and I could see everyone’s widened eyes. All of us rushed to the front door to check it. No one was there. I was expecting that.

“Maybe those kids were playing with the bell. They do that all the time.” Harry said in frustration.

We all went back to the hall. The time was 11 now. “Don’t we have to clear the mess in the kitchen?” Kate asked sitting on the floor. “No... The housekeeper will clean it tomorrow.” Harry answered.

“We all had a very long night. Let’s head to bed.”  Max said yawning.

We all helped Harry with setting up the bed on the floor. I was cuddled up against Luke’s chest. “Goodnight gorgeous” Luke whispered and kissed my cheek.

“We all are here, Luke. You can give me a goodnight kiss too.” Max said in a girly voice. Luke laughed and turned around to kiss him.

“I cannot believe you would cheat on me.” I hit him on his chest.

 “I would never cheat on you; Max is just my back up.” He said in a serious tone. 

“Aww man, love you too.” Max said kissing him on his cheek.

“You guys are so gay. Eve, be careful.”Alex said in disbelief. Everyone burst out laughing.

“Goodnight guys” I mumbled and drifted off to sleep.

‘Next time when you try to say, someone you love will die. But I assure you one day, you don’t have to live a life in a lie.’  The same voice echoed again and again. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. I needed some air. I checked the time. It was just 6. I got up and went to the patio. It was pretty chilly for June. I sat down on the stairs and started thinking about recent events. This nightmare has haunted me since the last 5 years. I need to find what the story behind it is, Why I am getting them only when I get hurt and moreover Why can’t I let anyone know about my nightmares. The answers to all my questions lies in that postcard. I was so lost in thoughts that I never saw or heard Harry entering the patio.

“Hey, Why are you up so early, Eve?” Harry sat next to me.

“Couldn’t sleep.” I said with a shrug.

“Anything bothering you?”

“No.... Well your birthday is in a week. Planned anything?”

“Not much. Just a small treat for you guys.”

“It’s your 18th birthday. You got to have a grand celebration.” I literally whined.

“We are going to a pub. So no worries. We all are going to be drunk. Anyways I am fine with you guys alone.”

“Let’s get inside.”

When we both went back inside, everyone was still asleep.

“Do you think we should wake them up?” Harry asked.

“No, we better make some breakfast.”

Harry helped me in making pancakes and bacon. We both started eating while Luke and Alex came in. They always know the right time. After Luke and Alex helped themselves with a load of pancakes, Alex signaled me to act to her plan.

“So Eve and I are going to the spa in like two hours.”

“From when did you two start going for spas?” Harry asked really surprised.

“Harry, we always went, but never got an opportunity to tell you.” I replied instead of Alex.

“Anyways we need to get going after breakfast... Need some stuffs to get from house.” Alex said while she was working on her pancakes.

Luke offered to drop us home. Everyone was sleeping when we left and I am sure Harry would dose off after his breakfast.

“Bye Eve, Bye Alex.”  Luke kissed me goodbye and pulled away from the drive way.

“Okay, let’s go get some answers.”
