As soon as I left Hotch's office, I went to the bathroom. I look myself in the mirror 'What the hell are you doing Jessie? He is your boss. He is also an agent. Your last agent didn't treat you very good'. I close my eyes and I take a deep breath. I hear the door open so I turn and I see Emily.
"Jessie? Are you ok?" she asks
"Yeah, everything is fine" I say
"Did something happen with Hotch?" she asks
"No, no. Everything is fine. I'll see you in the conference room" I say and I walk out of the bathroom.
I was the first in the conference room, so I sat there and enjoyed the silence for a bit. Soon everyone gathered and we got the files of the case. "Two families were attacked in their homes during the last three weeks with the last being yesterday. All four parents were killed, the babysitter of the second family that happened to be in the house that day was killed too and all five of the victims were drawn and found dead on their beds. The families had five kids in total. The first family had three, the second two. Only the oldest daughter of the first family was killed. The rest of the kids are still missing" JJ says
"Any signs of burglary?" I ask
"Only cash was missing. Jewelry, expensive devices were intact" she says
"So the primary motive was to kill and take the kids. Wheels up in 10" Hotch says.
I tried to leave as fast as possible so I won't have to talk to Hotch but I failed. "Jessie, I'm really sorry about earlier. I shouldn't have--" he says but I interrupt him
"Don't worry about it. Besides, I leaned too" I say and he nods. We leave the conference room together and we head to the car. Hotch was driving and Rossi was in the passenger seat. I sat behind Hotch to avoid any awkward looks and Emily sat next to me.
"Hotch, I just left my reports on your desk before coming down here" Emily says
"Thank you Emily. I'll take a look at them after we return" he says
"What about you? Everything ok?" she asks me
"Yeah. With the help of agent Hotchner, I think I got it" I say
"Good. If there is anything else you need, you know where to find me" she says
"Thank you. I appreciate it" I say
"No need to. You're part of the team now" she says and I nod. In the rest of the drive, I caught Hotch's eyes on the review mirror more than a few times. I'm not gonna lie, I kinda liked it.
In the jet, we sat across from eachother but still avoided to look at eachother. "Jessie?" JJ asks and I look at her and Emily who where talking "Are you in for a night out after the case is over? I mean it's Vegas" she asks
"I don't know" I say hesitating a bit
"Come on princess" Morgan says
"Ok, fine" I say
"Great. You got an outfit?" Emily asks
"Of course I do. You always need to be prepared for everything" I say
"Exactly. That's why we carry bigger bags than you" she says to Morgan and he rolls his eyes.
"How about you Hotch? Are you in?" he asks
"We'll see" he answers without taking his eyes off the files. "Reid and Morgan go to the morgue, Rossi, Grey and Prentiss go to the crime scene, JJ and I will head to the police station" he continues and we all just agree.
As soon as we got to the house of the second family, the bedroom was like a bloodbath. The bodies were already to the morgue. "There is blood in the living room and the hallway but the bedroom has four times the amount of blood in the living room" Emily says and I take one more look around
"So the unsub knocks them out in the living room and hallway and then drag them in the bedroom and kill them, including the babysitter" I say
"But why risk them gaining conscious again? I mean by the time he dragged the last victim in the bedroom, the first could wake up again or the kids run in here" Rossi says
"Not if someone was keeping an eye on them" I suggest
"So we are looking for two unsubs" Rossi says
"I think so" I say.
"Guys, isn't all the family brunettes?" Emily asks
"Yeah" I say walking to her and she shows us a blonde long hair
"I think that we are looking for male and female" she says
"So he knocks out the parents and she watches the kids and the rest of them until he's done" Rossi says
"Exactly" I say. Rossi's phone starts ringing and he walks away to answer.
"So what happened between you and Hotch?" Emily asks as soon as we are alone
"What? Nothing happened" I say
"Are you sure?" she asks
"Yes" I say
"Ok..." she answers but still not believing me.
"How long were you waiting to ask me that?" I ask her
"Since the car ride. I could feel the tension" she says
"Like I said, nothing happened" I say
"But you wanted to, didn't you?" she asks smiling
"Emily!" I say and she starts laughing.
"What's so funny?" Rossi asks as he comes back
"Nothing" I say
"Hotch called. They found the bodies of the two kids that were missing from the first family in an alley. He is gonna meet us there" he says
"Ok, let's go" I say and we head out.
"Grey?" he asks
"Yes?" I answer
"Have we met before?" he asks
"I've been told that we have but it's been many years. Agent Thomas Grey" I say
"Oh my God! Little Jess. The last time I saw you, you were what? 5 years old? How long has it been?" he asks
"22 years. It's been 22 years since my dad died" I say
"22 years... I didn't know that you wanted to join the BAU and I certainly didn't know that you were joining the team" he says
"I didn't know you came back to work either. By the way, I read your books. They were inspiring" I say
"Good to know" he says and I chuckle
"You didn't need to hear that from me. You have already made... How much?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"How is Melissa?" he asks
"My mom died last year. Breast cancer" I say
"I'm sorry kiddo. What about your brother, James?" he says
"Interpol" I say
"Everyone in the business" he says
"Yeap" I say.
