A few months later
The end of the school year was finally upon the seniors of Westview High School. Some kids were rushing to apply to the best colleges in the area while others were trying to find a good paying job.
Every parent was in a frenzy just as their children. Mother's could be seen wiping their eyes as their young one's walked across the stage, receiving their blue mortarboard and certificates. Even the fathers looked like they were holding back tears.
Minx's parents were one of the only ones who didn't shed a single tear, including Kai's father. They looked on with solemn expressions as they graduated, and his dad only applauded when Josette had the piece of paper in her grasp.
The two teenagers didn't mind. They were disgusted with how emotional everyone was being. Seriously, what was the big deal? So what, their offspring are graduating high school and they cry over it? Just a bunch of crybabies, if you were to ask them. There's way better reasons to cry a river.
Kai and Minx had remained close throughout the rest of the year. Every time a jock would cat-call her, Kai would be right by her side and they'd both simultaneously give them the middle finger. The Parker boy mostly stayed away from girls which was very odd to him, but he surprisingly didn't mind. He had his friend to keep him company instead of a new whore every night.
She would help him with Chemistry and he'd help her with Algebra. They had a great dynamic going to the point where they were passing all of their classes with straight A's.
There was only one problem in the midst of their life. Minx was accepted into Stanford, a staggering 10 hours and 30 minute drive away from where Kai was being forced to stay in Portland. His father didn't like the idea of Kai being away out in the real world where he'd have the freedom to do anything he pleased, so he decided to force him into submission when it came to the topic of staying at home.
The Payne girl was torn. Kai was, to put it lightly, her best friend and she wasn't fond of the idea of leaving him all alone. She had long accepted his status of being a Siphoner and she understood how horribly his family treated him because of it. While his family was forcing him to stay, hers was pushing for her to leave. It had been clear to her for a long time that they wanted her out of their lives so it wasn't a hard pill to swallow.
While they didn't know what was going to happen, they relished in the moment of being together. They sat side by side outside, passing a cigarette back and forth while they talked about any and every thing. "What if you cloaked yourself and I stowed you away in my largest suitcase? I mean, it'd take a bit of getting used to, but I'm sure you could do it." Kai chuckled and sighed, a cloud of smoke escaping his lips. Minx inhaled the secondhand smoke and licked her lips.
"I don't think that'd be much help babe. My dad's a wizard, meaning he's unfortunately not as stupid as the cops."
"I can't just leave you here with him. We keep each other sane. We made a pact, Kai."
