I...just listened to this song for the first time in years and now I'm dying. So I made this.
I'm also aware of a deeper meaning of this song but I'm not going with it.
"Alex!" She was inside. In the flames. I had been searching for her all night, and she could die without knowing I was looking for her. I felt my heart fall into a pit of despair, before I recklessly charged in. Someone tried to stop me, but I pushed them away, blinded by my desperation. "Alex!" I cried once again as I felt the biting heat around me. There was no response.
"Alexandri! It's me!" I called, frantically searching for her. I wasn't wearing any armor, only a dress she'd made for me. Where was she? Fear rose in my throat. Death Goddess please, don't take her yet! I prayed silently.
I tripped over the hem of my dress, landing hard against the floor. Painfully, I stood up, jumping in surprise as debris fell from the ceiling. A cry of fear alerted me to her position, and I ran to the sound. "Alex!" I called over the crackling of the fire.
She was huddled on a table, her knees pulled to her chest. Flames licked around the bottom of the table, and there was a newly fallen pile of debris a few feet away from the edge. "Jess?" Her eyes met mine, but she did nothing else. It was as if fear kept her frozen still.
Something creaked above her, and we both looked up. A board was readying to fall, but she was too afraid to move. "Alex!" I cried, running for her and pushing her out of the way. As it fell, we only barely got out of the way.
Alexandri shivered in my arms. She shivered despite the heat. The building was going to collapse in on itself. We were going to die. "Jessika." She whispered, clinging tight to me. I held her to my chest. Fear kept my heart pounding. Suddenly I realized I was crying, sobbing into her.
I was scared. Scared she would die. Scared I would die. Scared of what would happen. Please, Death Goddess...Spare us, please... I had never felt this kind of fear before, it was overwhelming.
Something else fell, and Alexandri jumped in fear, shifting into a cat. I curled around her feline body. Even if we died, I would protect her to the end.
"It'll be okay..." I whispered, hoping it was right. Alexandri didn't respond, which frightened me. Was she...was she...dead? No...she couldn't be. She was still trembling. I longed to hear her voice telling me it was alright. At the rate everything was going, I would die of fear before I died from the flames.
The licked the air close to us, growing bigger by the second. I could barely stand the searing heat, tucking my tail between my legs and trying to keep my wings folded under my arms. "Alex, please...say something..." I begged. If we died...could I at least hear her voice one last time before I went?
Something hot flickered against my back. It hurt, but I grit my teeth, keeping silent. "I'm scared..." I whispered. Tiny claws dug into my chest, but it was nothing compared to the pain that shot up my back suddenly. It felt like a hot poker being stabbed deep into my skin. I screamed."Jess! Jess!" A voice called. "It's okay. Whatever happened, it's okay." Someone pulled me close to their chest. It was...cold. There were no flames. No death. No smoke.
Only me and two other people. They were hugging me. One of them was stroking my back, the other simply hugging me. Alexandri and Sorrel...
Was I dead? Had I passed out from shock? What happened?
"It's okay. You're safe." That was Alexandri. Was I really safe? I began to sob, holding onto both of them tightly. The flames still flickered at the edge of my vision, and I trembled. If it...if it really had been just a dream...why had it hurt so bad?
So...in my opinion the song is about someone who accidentally screwed up their relationship and is trying to get it back when suddenly their lover gets caught in a house fire and dies. The person singing the song tried to get them out but was unable to and every night they are haunted by their guilt and their sadness in a PTSD sort of way.
Yet I took it almost completely literally and just made it so Jessika had a nightmare about her and Alexandri getting trapped in a fire and dying. Which...sort of warns of something that happens in their storyline. They don't die but there is a fire.
