Chapter 9

After another week of this punishing cycle, they both needed change. Kenma knew Kuroo couldn't last much longer mentally, it was just a race of what would give out first at this point, his mental or physical health. Just to hold on a little bit longer, Kenma got up bright and early the next day with a plan.

It was a weekend, and Kenma went straight to the nearest store. He scoured the isles until he found what he needed, and left after purchasing it. For the first time in a long time, he was excited for what was about to happen.

After gathering everything he needed, he drove to the hospital, his mind too distracted with his plan to let any other thoughts cloud it. He arrived at the hospital, earlier than usual. When he walked in, he had everything in a bag.

Kuroo looked at Kenma, a slight smile on his face. He looked excited, but pointed at the bag in Kenma's hand.

"Hi Kuroo! I hope you had a good day, I came a little early to do something special for you."

Kuroo looked back at him, visibly confused.

"Can you do something for me Kuroo? You have to trust me, it's worth it."

Kuroo nodded, his hazel eyes already filled with anticipation.

"Ok, just close your eyes for a little bit. I'm gonna set everything up, and when I tell you, you can open them again, just trust me Kuroo-san, it will be worth it."

Kuroo looked a little confused, but closed his eyes gently.

"Ok, make sure you don't open them, I'll set it up now."

While Kuroo's eyes were closed, he heard Kenma opening boxes and walking all around the room, even above him at one point. He was confused, but eventually he felt a nudge at his leg.

"Ok Kuroo, you can open your eyes now."

When Kuroo opened his eyes, he adjusted to the dim lights, different from the normal bright fluorescents of the hospital. When he had adjusted, he was in awe. There were glow in the dark stars in the shape of constellations he knew all around the room.

"I know how much you love the outdoors and it's been so long since you have gone outside, so I brought it to you! Well, it feels kind of dumb now- I hope you like it Kuroo, I can take it down if you want-"

"I lo-love y-you."

Kuroo spoke to Kenma for the first time in weeks. His words were struggling, but so full of meaning. Kuroo looked worn out, but he was smiling his old goofy smile, his eyes teary.

Kenma was completely taken aback, Kuroo must have worked hard just for those words. Those words, just for Kenma.

"I love you too Kuroo, thank you for being here for me."

Kenma went up to Kuroo's bedside and gave him a light kiss on his soft lips.

After sitting there for a while just enjoying each other, Kuroo fell asleep, he must have been worn out from all of the activity of the day. Kenma usually left when Kuroo fell asleep, but this time he stayed, just admiring Kuroo's restful body peacefully.

After what felt like a long period of time, Kenma thought Kuroo was in a deep sleep.

"You know Kuroo, without you I don't think I would be here today."

Silence. What else should he expect?

"We were friends ever since childhood, an your guidance is what has gotten me to where I am today. I'm so sorry I'm wasting the opportunity you have given me. Just for you, I will try harder. After all, you try hard for me every day, I can't let your work go to waste. I think I've always loved you Kuroo. Ever since I met you, there was something about you that was different. I wish we had more time together, why is reality so cruel. All I want is to switch places with you, you don't deserve this. You are nothing short of perfection, I know if you could you would be making dumb short jokes right now. God, I love you and your annoying ass so much. I fucking love you, Kuroo Tetsurou."

Almost like a movie, Kenma half expected Kuroo to open his eyes to Kenma's confessions, but this isn't a fairytale.

"Thank you Kuroo, with everything I have, thank you."
