The night every boarding student dreams of was finally here, the eve of our vacation.
We were going over our vacation plans in the space of packing. The plan was to 'have a sleepover at Petra's place', as far as Max would know. But we were covertly going to spend it at my Dad's beach resort in Cape Coast.
There was a wrap on the agape door. I looked up to find the Derrick already beaming in my direction. "Can I borrow her?"
Lois raised a finger up, "bring her back in an hour."
"I'll try," He responded while holding out his hands to me. I reached for it as we walked hand in hand.
A peaceful night. Even with the cluster of noise from around.
In a short time, I noticed the array of prepossessing kaleidoscope of colors shower up in the air.
Fireworks!
I breathed in the air of freedom, wishing my life were as unconfined as these explosions.
They were from our school field.
We walked past the student who were setting them up, and to a more secluded area. We came about the spot on the field where his SpongeBob bed spread had been laid on the grass.
"This is not your ideal picnic, but I tried to be innovative", he stated as I lounged beside him on the ground.
I never thought he would say more than ten words to me, lest a whole date. Was I dreaming?
"I just hope you like this," he shrugged.
"I like anything", but I swallowed my words instead.
He took out the stock of food that had been packed, and we began to delve into our little picnic meal along with a few drinks, engaging ourselves in random conversations.
"Beauty and the beast."
"Ouch", he placed his hands over his chest in mockery of a heartache.
"No. You are beauty and I am the beast", before he could interrupt, I interjected, "the first times you met me, I was in a horrible condition. I'm not Princess Aurora so, I know I was not a beauty when I collapsed."
"The first time I saw you, I was like woah", he stated, clearly lying to win me over. The only time it should be acceptable for a boy to lie is when he's complimenting. "And that was the day you and Petra were shouting in the middle of the school compound. I just thought, 'wow!'"
Was there a cult where boys learnt how to sweet-talk?
This was the moment in movies where we kiss but... nope! I was not going to let it happen. Not now when I just finished eating. I don't want someone to think of onions when they kiss me, they should think of fireworks and sparks and lightening.
I disrupted the moment abruptly by raising the topic about the universities we were deciding on going to.
"University of Cape Town", his response almost had me choking. "My dad works with an organization that is in link with the University of Cape Town", he began to explain. "The program is being offered to a selected number of High School graduates."
"So, you are going all the way to South Africa?", I asked slightly concerned.
"You should come along with me. The organization would take care of your student visa and work permit too." He went ahead to explain the program and even offering to send me the forms online. "All you would have to do is wait to send them your results slip and look out for their response."
I sighed. It was a good opportunity buy, "my brother wouldn't even allow me take fresh air from our porch. It'll be hard convincing him to let me move to another country."
