Disaster. Breakfast was rather quiet after that. No one really wanted to talk. It was her fault, she rightfully blamed herself. Sirius was joking about how a tragic pairing of Severus and her had at least brought her back to the fold. He was joking that the two were such an unlikely pair. He was joking about how Severus didn't deserve someone like her.
He was joking, to be mean. He was always like that. When he didn't get his way about something. When he felt cheated. When he didn't agree but couldn't figure out logically why. He always let his feelings get in the way of things. And he spoke out of turn far too much. In his defence. Life was cruel to him. He loved. And continued to loose what he loved. And perhaps this was his way of trying to hold onto her.
But it just made her angry. Of course he wouldn't understand. But he had no right. No matter his thinking. Well that's the problem. He wasn't thinking..
Viola ran a hand over the burnt out mark where Sirius was supposed to be on his family tree. The tapestry took up the entire room. How wonderful it would be to know your lineage so clearly. Never doubting where you came from. Or who you are. Always being able to trace it back to one source. She sighed. Hearing the slow creak from the staircase outside the room.
"Don't.." it was a whisper at first. But deafening in its meaning. She turned. Going further back down the line. The tree like pattern holding faces of family members she would never meet. Their faces seemed so hard. Viola wondered what they were truly like. Products of the environment they were raised in, blood purity a principal. Or did some hold secrets of who they truly are.
"Don't marry him." It was in the door way now. Louder.
"No. Don't do this." Viola sighed. Staring at the wall. She could hear him shake his head and do that half walk backwards before stepping forward again thing he did when he didn't really want to be in a situation or to let emotions out. He had two modes, covering up his emotions through rash humor. Or showing them through rash actions.
"Do what?" She shook her head. "Do something for me for once? Do something I want to do, for the sake of my happiness? Do something to have a life that is my own. One that isn't dictated by the Dark Lord or by what people tell me?" She turned around.
Sirius looked wide eyed. "I won't have you.." he began. But she cut him off.
"Sirius I don't owe you."
They both looked at eachother. Standing in the room of past mistakes. But a past. A mapped out and defined past. "I'm not you.. I don't have a great family name with a house attached to it, I don't have a family built on friends. I don't have a past. Yes I know we were both falsely imprisoned but you have. Everything I could have ever wanted. So why? Why won't you like me have this?"
"Beacuse you don't know him!" Sirius barked out. Sounding more like the mad dog she remembered from Azkaban. "Beacuse he's.. beacuse he's Snape! He..." Sirius tried to think of any good reason to discredit the potions master. But thinking back, their childhood squabbles was based souly on the fact that James didn't like him. Beacuse James wanted Lilly.
Sirius's face fell as he started to realize that, he had no solid argument. Despite the fact that he instinctivly didn't like him. Everything Severus was... Everything he became...
"You relentless children. Even now you haven't a clue how what you do effects others." She breathed.
"He's not evil. But I know he's done terrible things. He not cruel. He's built walls to keep people like you out. He's not blameless. I know what he's done. And what he will continue to do for the safety of those he pretends not to love. We all have a part in this war Sirius." She walked to him. "And I know mine. It's here. And there." She put a hand on his face. "It's with Severus."
