Danis Perspective

I'm quite aware that most people in the town don't exactly support mine and Jamie's relationship; but I luckily didn't have any first hand experience with any homophobia just yet.

"Jamie, wake up!" I quietly whispered to my girlfriend one morning. The alarm had already gone off a couple minutes ago, but she didn't wake up, so I quietly got up and got dressed already.

She opened her eyes and smiled. "Sorry Poppins, had quite the night, I guess I am a little overtired." She winked at me.

I jokingly rolled her eyes at her. "Come on now. We've got to get downstairs soon." She got up out of her bed and slowly started heading to the bathroom.

I had already gotten dressed so I took a quick look in the mirror to check my hair, before heading to the kitchen. I was relieved to only see myself in my reflection . Before I met Jamie, I used to see my ex-fiancé behind my shoulder anytime I saw my reflection.

In the kitchen, I started toasting some bread for me and Jamie for breakfast. Jamie came into the kitchen shortly after me. She was wearing black pants, a white shirt and a flannel, her classic outfit.
I gave her a quick smile before getting the bread out of the toaster.

It was a little burnt on the sides but I scratched of the black part. I wasn't the best cook, but I could make things work most of the time.

Jamie grabbed a slice and spread some jam on it. She started eating while leaning against the kitchen counter.

"You know" she said with a muffled voice while her mouth was filled with bread, "last night when I was closing up the store, I saw some man standing at the window. He must have seen us kissing before because he yelled "fucking homos!" towards me. It took me all of my willpower to not just end him right there."

My anxiety went through the roof. What if one of those people hurt one of us? What if they vandalised the store?

Jamie could see the worry in my face.
"Look, don't worry. Do you remember the old lady that wanted the arrangement for her dead husband on our first day?" I nodded. "She came back the other day while you were in the back and told me that she saw us holding hands and that she wishes us all the best in our relationship and that she supports us all the way. "

I gave a slight smile "Not everyone is like those awful homophobes, Poppins." She reassured me.

We went down to the Leafling after finishing breakfast and started opening up.

Just after opening, the old lady that came on our first day came in.

"Hi! Nice to see you again!" I greeted her. "Hello, I wanted to give you something my niece made recently. Just as a thank you for your amazing flowers."

She handed me 2 pins of a pink triangle, a symbol of identity especially in the LGBT community. "Thanks you so much. It's amazing."

"Your welcome hun. Just don't let other people get you down." She said as she left the shop.

My heart was incredibly happy and I went to look for Jamie to tell her about our encounter. She was in the back organising some paperwork.

"See I told you. Not everyone is like the idiot from yesterday." She told me and I felt secure.

The rest of the day went as usual and we closed up a little earlier than usual to go out to buy some wine to drink in the evening.

We enjoyed the wine while watching a movie and went to bed quite early so that we could make a thank you gift for the old lady in the morning.
