Abuja, Nigeria
2020.Two days had passed since Rayyan had been wheeled into Empire Hospital, and the frantic activities in the hospital had somewhat lessened.
Maliya, however, hadn't found a chance to relax. From ward to ward, she ran, consulting and treating.
She was running on a cup of coffee she'd drank earlier that morning and an apple she'd brought on her way to the E.R.
Everything in her hurt, from her feet covered in her black pair of crocs, to her legs, arms and head, but she welcomed the distraction.
She couldn't count how many times her mind had drifted to Rayyan.
He was placed in one of the private rooms for extra supervision, on the request of the Chief of Defense Staff.
The man had gone all out, assigning some personnel to stand station at the front of his room, which he had also instructed to be at a secluded, quiet area of the hospital where only few people had access to.
The CDS clearly felt indebted to Rayyan.
Maliya, in her hectic schedule, had still found some time to sneak into the area of the hospital where Rayyan was, it was there she saw the personnel guarding the door.
She knew she wouldn't be allowed entry, especially when Hajia Kamardeen wasn't around. Ans as close as she was to them, she still wasn't family.
"Good morning, Doctor" A nurse greeted her, panting. "I've been looking for you all morning".
" Morning, do you need something? " Maliya asked, dreading her response.
She'd hoped to slink away from the ward for a minute, get some rest in the residents' quarters probably.
Downsides of being a resident doctor.
"Doctor Linda's paging you" Maliya internally groaned as the words she dreaded left the nurse's mouth, but she smiled at her outwardly.
Wouldn't want anyone to carry any rumours, Lord knows she hadn't recovered from the rumours that had circulated about her and Zayn.
"I'll be there" She responded finally, sighing as she dragged her feet to Orthopaedics.
When she entered, Doctor Linda was slumped on her chair, looking as tired as Maliya felt.
Maliya smiled a little at the sight, but was caught before she could school her expression.
"I see my tiredness is amusing to you, Maliya" Doctor Linda said, faking an anger that Maliya found amusing.
"Very much" She answered, not even trying to hide her smile. Linda tried for a while to keep the faux angry expression on her face, failingly before the smile won.
"Sit" She motioned towards the chair in front of her. Maliya smiled, slumping against the chair tiredly.
"You look worn out, when last did you get some sleep?" Linda asked, concerned.
Maliya felt touched by her kindness, happy once again that she had Linda's support. "I got in an half hour of sleep yesterday morning before the HOD called me to assist Dr Mike from OBG in a surgery".
"The slim Dr Mike?" Linda asked, nodding when Maliya answered in the affirmative.
"To why I called you" Linda's tone turned serious, causing Maliya to sit up straight.
"I heard that you were around the private wards, standing outside the door of the patient you brought in from the NDA incident" Maliya felt something heavy in her gut drop.
