Chapter 9

There's gotta be another way out

I've been stuck in a cage with my doubt

I've tried forever getting out on my own

But every time I do this my way

I get caught in the lies of the enemy

I lay my troubles down

I'm ready for you now

On My Own by Ashes Remain

Skye's POV

"Well, there's no sulfur anywhere. How about the EMF?" Dean asks over the phone. I look down and sigh. "Yeah, it's going nuts. When I went over here by the window...There's definitely a spirit here." I say. "Who stood outside the crime scene and watched." Dean says. "Looks like." I say. "What the hell do you make of that?" He asks.

"Actually I do have a theory. Uh, sort of." I sigh. He is going to hate me so much for this. "Hit me." He says. Well here goes nothing. "Well, thinking about fairy tales." I say. "Oh that's...that's nice. You think about fairy tales often?" He teases and I roll my eyes. "No, Dean, I'm talking about the murders. A guy and a girl? Hiking through the woods, an old lady tries to eat 'em? That's Hansel and Gretel. And then we got three brothers, arguing over how to build houses, attacked by the Big Bad Wolf." I say.

"Three little pigs." He says. "Yeah." I say. "Actually those guys were a little chubby. Well, wait, I thought those things ended with, uh, everybody living happily ever after?" He says confused. "No, no. Not the originals. See the Grimm Brothers stuff was kinda the folklore of it's day, full of sex, violence, cannibalism. Now, it got sanitized over the years, turned into Disney flicks and bedtime stories." I say.

My childhood was definitely ruined after I read the true stories. "So you think the murders are uh, what? A re-enactment? That's a little crazy." He says. "Crazy as what? Every day of our lives?" I ask. "Touche. How's the creepy ghost girl involved?" Dean asks. "Uhm...Well, she must've been here for a reason. I'm willing to bet you top dollar she was at the construction site too." I say. "We gotta do research now, don't we?" He sighs. "What do you think?" I giggle and hang up.

~CUMBERLAND COUNTRY CENTRAL LIBRARY~

I wait outside the library, leaning against a tree, as Dean and Sam exit the library both aren't looking to happy. "So?" I ask. "Checked every record they had. Found the usual amount of violent childhood deaths for a town this size." Dean shakes his head. "Okay." I sigh as we walk across the road toward a park. "Wanna know how many were little girls with black hair and pale skin?" Sam asks. "Zero." Dean says as we enter the park. "Wanna know how many little girls with black hair and pale skin that have gone missing? Right again. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Tell us you've got something good cause we've totally wasted the last six hours." Dean complains.

"Well you two ever hear of Lillian Bailey? She was a British medium from the 1930's." I say. "She got a thing for fairy tales? Like you?" Dean smirks and I send a glare his way. Fucking smartass. "Nah, trances. See she'd go into these unconscious states where, uhm, get this, her thoughts and actions were completely controlled by spirits." I say. "A ghost puppet master." Dean says. "Yeah." Sam says. "Think that's what this kid is doing? Sending wolfboy and grandma into trances, making them go kill-crazy?" Dean asks. "Could be. You know, kinda like uh, uh, spirit hypnosis or something." Sam says.

"Trances I get, but fairy tale trances? That's bizarre even for us." Dean says. "Dean does have a point. I mean we deal with a lot of crazy shit but fairy tale trances is over the top." I say as we stop walking. I look down and there is a bullfrog croaking. Princess and the frog. "Yeah, you're both right. That's completely normal." Sam says as the bullfrog croaks again and again. "All right, maybe it is fairy tales. I tell you two one thing, there's no way I'm kissing a damn frog. But maybe Skye can." Dean says. "Fuck no." I say. "Hey. Check that out." Sam says and I look at him and see him pointing to a house that has a pumpkin on the porch. "Yeah? It's close to Halloween." Dean says.
