Chapter 25

Oh, I had a lot to say
Was thinkin' all my time away
I missed you and things weren't the same

"There's no records of any of this here. No one got shot here. Obviously, no one got run over by a fucking train." Dean says. "But why are there so many echoes here? It doesn't make sense." I say to him. "Stay close." Sam says. "Did the echoes take Corbett?" Maggie asks. "Yes. No. I don't know. We don't know what's going on here...that's what we're trying to figure out, okay?" I say. "All right, stay close. Okay, look, um, death echoes are ghosts, okay? Now, ghosts...they usually haunt places where they lived or where they died." Sam says. "Except these mooks didn't live or die here." Dean states. "Right." Sam sighs.

"So, what are they doing here?" Maggie asks. "Hey, give the lady a cigar. All right, seriously, does looking at this nightmare through that camera make you feel better or something? I mean...for fuck sakes." Dean shoves Spruce away. "Dean calm down." I whisper but he just rolls his eyes at me. I scoff. Jackass. "Um...I...Well, yeah. I think so." Maggie stutters. I look around and see a broken frame certificate. I pick it up. "Freeman Daggett, house's last owner, officially commended for 20 years of fine service at the Gamble General Hospital." I say. "He was a doctor?" Dean asks. "Janitor." I say. "This looks like his den. When'd you say he died? '64?" Dean asks.

"Yeah, heart attack." I say. "What are these, c-rations?" Maggie asks. "Yeah, army-issued, three squares...like a lifetime supply." Dean says. "God, is that all he ate?" She asks. "One-stop shopping." Dean says. "Oh, come on, guys. This is ridiculous. I mean, how the hell is this supposed to find Corbett, huh? We should be digging up the fucking floorboards right now." Ed says. I roll my eyes and pick up a dusty pamphlet. "Huh. Survival Under Atomic Attack." I say as I try to read it. "An optimist." Sam says and I nod.

I jump as there is a loud bang and I look over and see that Dean has pried open the safe. "Crap. Crap. Taxidermy. Okay. You said Daggett was a hospital janitor?" Dean asks me. "Yeah." I say. "Ewww. Got three toe tags here...one, death by gunshots, train accident, and suicide." Dean says. "Ewww." I cringe. "What" Harry asks. "Well, that explains why all the death echoes are here. They're here because their bodies are here...somewhere in the house." Sam says. "Daggett brought the remains home from the morgue. To play." Dean says. "Ewwww!!! Ugh!!" Ed and Harry gag. "That's nasty, dude." Spruce says.

"Right." I say. "Wait a minute." Dean says. "Corbett." Maggie says. "Closer to the herd, okay?" I say. "Maggie? Maggie?" Harry asks. "She's fine." Dean says. "Harry. Harry, I got an 8.6 and climbing fast. Something huge is coming. Look. Something big is coming." Ed says.

"It's past 11, you guys." Harry says. I look at Dean with wide eyes. "What? Nobody move! Hold on. Stay quiet." Dean says. "It's really cold in here." Ed says as I shiver. Dean pulls me close to him and rubs my arm. "Harry?" Maggie asks. "Sam?" I ask, looking around but can't find him. "Some kind of surge." Ed shrugs. "Sam?" Dean asks. "Where'd he go?" I ask.

"Oh, no." Dean whispers and I see Sam's flashlight and I leave Dean's arms and pick it up. "Sam!!" I yell. "Sammy!!" Dean yells. "Corbett! Sam!" Ed yells. "Sam!" I yell. "Corbett! Corbett!" Harry yells. "Sam!" Dean yells.

"Get off Harry!" Maggie yells and I and Dean break up the fight. "What the fuck are you doing?! Cut it out! We're down by two people. Sam! Sammy!" Dean yells. "Great." Maggie sighs. "He is banging my sister!" Ed yells pointing at Harry. Oh for fuck sakes. "Sorry." Harry sighs. "I'm sorry. Give me my glasses. Did he knock my...my tooth there?" Ed asks me.

"Uh, no." I say. "I won that, right?" Ed chuckles. "Yep. You're good." Spruce says. "Thanks, Spruce." Harry sighs. "Yeah, it's my fault." Spruce says. "That's really great. That's nice. Thanks." Maggie says and I roll my eyes.

"Corbett! Where'd you guys go?" Harry asks. "Where are they?" Maggie asks. "Dean, what are you doing?" I ask. "Okay, so Daggett was a cold war nut, okay? He was...he was an amateur taxidermist. He liked to slow dance with cadavers, and all he ate were c-rations, so what the hell are we looking for?!" Dean yells. "Horrible little life." I say to Maggie and we laugh. "Yeah, a lonely life...A cold war life. He was scared." Dean says. "Scared of what? What? Dean, where are you going?" I ask. "Guys like Daggett back then, the ones who were really scared of the Russkies...they built bomb shelters. I'm guessing he's got one. I'll bet you it's in the basement." Dean says as the door slams behind us, cutting me, Dean, and Spruce off from Harry, Ed, and Maggie.
