Chapter 23

Yes I understand
That every life must end
As we sit alone
I know someday we must go

Just Breath by Pearl Jam

"Hey, that's Jenna Rubner." Nancy says and I look over at the doors and see a woman with long red hair and black eyes. "That's not Jenna anymore." I say. "That's where all that black demon smoke went?" Nancy asks. "Looks like." I sigh. I look at Sam. "You got this?" I ask. "Yeah. You go help Dean." He says. I nod a thanks to him and leave the room.

"Shotgun shells full of salt." Henricksen says as I walk over to Dean and help him fill the shotguns. "Whatever works." He says. "Fighting off monsters with condiments. So. Turns out demons are real." He says as he takes off his and starts filling his rifle with salt shells. "FYI, ghosts are real too. So are werewolves, vampires, changelings, evil clowns that eat people." I say. "Okay then." He says. "If it makes you feel better, Bigfoot's a hoax." Dean smiles. "It doesn't. How many demons?" He asks. "Total? No clue. A lot." I say. "You know what my job is?" Henricksen asks.

"You mean besides locking up the good guys?" I ask walking over to him. "I have no idea." I say. "My job is boring, it's frustrating. You work three years for one break, and then maybe you can save...a few people. Maybe. That's the payoff. I've been busting my ass for 15 years to nail a handful of guys and all this while, there's something off in the corner so big. So yeah....sign me up for that big, frosty mug wasting my damn life." He says. "You didn't know." Dean says. "Now I do. What's out there? Can you guys beat it? Can you win?" He asks. "Honestly? I think the world's gonna end bloody. But it doesn't mean we shouldn't fight. We do have choices. I choose to go down swinging." Dean says. I look at him. "What about you?" I ask him. "Mmm-mm. Empty apartment, string of angry ex-wives." He chuckles.

"Imagine that." Dean says but all of a sudden there is a crash. We run to the office where Phil, Nancy and Sam are. A woman broke in. "How do we kill her?" Henricksen asks pointing his rifle at her. "We don't." Sam says, lowering Henricksen's rifle. "She's a demon." He says. "She's here to help us." I say as I recognize the woman is Ruby. "Are you kidding?" Phil asks. "Are you gonna let me out?" She asks.

Henricksen looks at me as Sam scratches the devil's trap on the floor with his knife so Ruby can get in. "And they say chivalry's dead. Does anyone have a breath mint? Some guts splattered in my mouth while I was killing my way in here." She says as she walks past everyone and into the main office. Me, Dean and Henricksen follow her, while Sam stays to fix the salt line. "How many are out there?" I ask. "30 at least. That's so far." She says. "Oh, good. 30. 30 hit men all gunning for us. Who sent them?" Dean asks. "You didn't tell them?" She asks Sam.

"Tell us what Ruby?" I ask. "Oh, I'm surprised." She chuckles. "What." Dean demands. "There's a big new up and corner. Real pied piper." She says. "Who is he?" I ask. "Not he. Her. Her name is Lilith." She says. "Lilith?" Dean asks. "And she really, really wants Sam's intestines on a stick. Cause she sees him as competition." She says. I turn to Sam. "You knew about this?" I ask him and I get my answer when he doesn't respond. Just great. "Well, gee, Sam. Is there anything else we should know?!" Dean yells.

"How about the three of you talk about this later? We'll need the Colt. Where is it?' She asks. "It got stolen." I say. "I'm sorry. I must have blood in my ear. I thought I just heard you say that you were stupid enough to let the Colt get grabbed out of your thick, clumsy, idiotic hands. Fantastic. This is just peachy." She scoffs. "Ruby." Sam sighs. "Shut up. Fine. Since I don't see that there's no other any option. There's one other way I know how to get you out of here alive." She says. "What's that?' I ask. "I know a spell. It'll vaporize every demon in one-mile radius. Myself included. So, you let the Colt out of your sight and now I have to die. So next time, be more careful. How's that for a dying wish?" She rolls her eyes.
