Chapter 16: Reminder of who is in Charge

Amy: Admit it Chars, we are lost.

Charles: Damn it Amy, if you would've given better directions then maybe we wouldn't be lost!

Amy: Well you're the one driving!

Charles: And you're the one with the map!

Well, this was troublesome. It seems like the CAFE gang has been lost. All they knew was that they were in the middle of the California and Nevada border, somewhere on the Interstate 15 highway. There was nothing but wasteland for miles and miles. The heat was so intense that they could cook eggs on the asphalt. Eventually, after so much driving, the car engine started releasing smoke.

Amy: Damn it Chars you let the engine overheat! Pullover!

Amy got out of the car and lifted the hood of the car, a large cloud of steam escaped. This was bad news. Temperatures were at least in the 100s.

Chars: Well how long until it cools down?

Amy: Well with all this heat I'd say a couple of hours.

This was really bad news for the CAFE gang, they had the choice of staying and waiting for the car engine to cool down, or ditch the car and hope there is something better for them waiting. This was a tough choice to make, especially for Charles since he was the group leader. It has only been moments since the car has stopped and everyone was already sweating immensely. The heat made it hard for Charles to think. As a drop of sweat rolled down the side of his face he made the decision.

Charles: Come on let's go.

Amy: What?

Charles: You heard me. Everyone pack only what's necessary, we are ditching the car.

Karina: Is this guy serious?

Karina questioned Charles' decision. Only a mad man would dare to walk under all this heat. It was around noon so the sun was at its highest, turning the inside of the car into an oven.

Charles: Listen here, the only reason why I let you join the group was because Magi knows you. Otherwise, I would drop you like that *snaps finger*.

Karina: Who do you think you're talking to? I am older than you-

Charles: I couldn't give a rat's ass if you're twice my age. These are MY people therefore MY responsibility. If you want to stay here and wait for the car to cool down in this 100-degree weather, then by all means be my guest. But if you think I would risk the lives of these girls just because you don't want to walk then you are dead wrong. So what is it, will you stay or shut up and follow us?

Karina had a sour face, she felt so disrespected by Charles. She didn't want to get abandoned so she shut her mouth and started grabbing her things. In the years that Amy has known Charles, she has hardly ever seen him get like this, the heat must be getting to him she thought. And so they headed out into the never-ending desert.
