When my name was drawn to be a tribute in The Lethal Games, I was terrified.

However, when my best friend and crush, Izuku Midoriya, got chosen as well, I was mortified.

All I'm able to think about is his safety as I grab the arm of a backpack near the edge of the forest, right at the start of the games.

Hearing footfalls behind me, I twist around and swiftly dodge the attack. We continue this little dance of ours until he manages to slash a slit into my left cheek towards my hairline.

I wince and swing my bag at him, finally spotting a weak point. It collides with his side and he stumbles before ultimately falling from the force of my hit, and I dart off into the woods before he could recover.

Meeting up with Deku, his eyes widen and he silently frets over the cut I received before I stop him by hurriedly taking his hand. We both jolt our hands apart at the sudden sparking from our wrist devices, but I snatch his hand again and make him run off with me, ignoring the pain.

The tribute who I escaped from is practically on our heels as we barrel onwards, but somehow, we got away.

As we slowed our pace, Deku tripped and my hand jerked down with him, but I stayed standing as I assisted him with getting back on his feet. His face flushed red in embarrassment, but that's when we heard some shuffling off to the side, so we immediately crouched and let one another go.

After hiding behind some bushes, my eyes lock onto a male with red, spiked-up hair and a girl, who were attempting to communicate via hand signals. Apparently, from what I could tell, it wasn't working too well.

Out of my peripherals, I noticed Deku glancing at me, so I looked back at him. He gestured off to our right and I nod, us both carefully tip-toeing away when a branch randomly snapped from under our feet.

Luckily, we were able to duck behind the cover of a tree before they could see us, my spine pressed firmly against the rigid bark as Deku kept his body only mere millimeters from mine. One of his forearms were planted just above my head as the other hovered by the right side of my waist, and I tried my damndest to keep my breathing under control as he stared in the direction of the other tributes.

He didn't seem to realize how close we were as he lightly tugged my semi-frozen form to make our second grand escape of the day. I snap out of it and scurry off with him just as the two strangers were investigating where the branch had previously broken.

We eventually came across a small, hollowed-out cave that appeared to be man-made and settled down inside of it, worn out from all of our day's exercise. The sun is beginning to dwindle downward and the blood on my cheek had dried up some time ago.

I'm honestly surprised by how fast the time had passed us by, and when Deku motions for me to follow him, I oblige.

He leads me to sit at the edge of the cave by the dirt, and he engraves in it, "That was a close call back there."
